Gold Medals for Mother’s Day

Brentwood crews spent most of last weekend on the 2km race course at Shawnigan Lake and it was a pretty successful weekend for the women’s program.

Early on Saturday morning, when the lake was still calm and the sun just woken up, Emily L and Ellenna W raced their double in a Junior B event into the B final where they chased the other crews down the lake and came in second. In another Junior B event, the 4+ with Emily L, Ellie K, Steph C, Claire D and Paige L (cox) placed third. Mrs. Sage was very proud of all the performances from the Grade 9 and 10 girls.

Mariel F, Lucy S, Carolyn B and Hye Young R rowed the 2km without a coxswain, who Mrs. Sage defines as the “Brain of the boat”, but with Hye Young managed to perfectly steer the boat and motivate her crew into second.

Later on Saturday, two Brentwood 8+s raced in the Junior A JV event. Even though the second  8+ beat Shawnigan for a third place finish, Lucy S, Vanessa S, Gillian M, Isabel R, Kelsey S, Hye Young R, Bronwen S, Klara S and Eduarda Aranha (Cox) reached the finish line in the Legacy about 10 seconds earlier and made second place. This probably means there will be a payback next practice!

After all the well-earned ribbons, the Senior 4x- with Annika S, Tara C, Ailish T and Spencer M placed first and got Gold. The four girls continued this success story with Mariel F, Kirsten M, Carolyn B and Joanna L in an 8+ the following day where they also came first.

It was not just the girls who were happy about this success; it was also a nice gift for Mrs. Sage as the proud mother of the Brentwood Women’s Crews.

The final ribbons for third place were earned by Emily L, Ellie K, Claire D, Steph C, Vanessa S, Mollie M, Lauren H, Featherdawn F and Isabel D (cox) in their eight and by Rebekah P in her single; Rebekah P also came second in the B final the previous day.

Sadly, the last races on Sunday were cancelled because of bad weather.

Not only was the regatta a great success with lots of ribbons and hardware but the girls had a great opportunity to pull hard and also learn from their mistakes to prepare for the National Championships in St. Catharines which is coming up on the last weekend in May.
