For many, coming back to school after Thanksgiving Break was bittersweet. After the mounds of turkey and stuffing consumed, it was time to get back to work, especially on Airband performances. Airband is a competition in which groups from competitive houses get together and lip sync and dance to mashups of songs. It is a night where everyone has fun, regardless of whether his or her group won or not. Three judges were appointed to decide the winners in each of the three categories – junior, mixed, and senior. The judges this year were Mr. Cowie, Mrs. Quinton, and Mr. Quinton. The triple threat panel had some very tough decisions to make over the course of the evening. The two student hosts for the Saturday night were Donovan M and Jarl W; they kept the crowd entertained between acts and even did some crafty improvisations during times of technical difficulty. This year’s competition opened with a Mackenzie/Ellis senior group performance of a combination of “Bye Bye Bye” by N’SYNC and “Run the World (Girls)” by Beyonce. The eclectic performance was a crowd and judge hit landing it the number three spot for the senior category. The song combinations ranged from heartfelt ballads like “My Heart Will Go On” to pop culture hits “Gangnam Style” and “What Does the Fox Say” to the ever-popular mashup song this year – “Gas Pedal”. All of the groups gave everything they had on the stage in hopes of winning coveted competitive house points, and of course, to have a great time. In the end, Mackenzie/Ellis came away as the overall winner of the evening by winning first in the junior and senior divisions, as well as third in the senior division. The other winners were Allard/Rogers taking third in junior and mixed, and second in Senior, Alex/Whittall with second in junior and mixed, and Privett/Hope with first in mixed. Congratulations and well done to everyone who performed. It was wonderful seeing everyone’s moves. Thank you to the Grad Council and Mrs. Martin for organizing and hosting the event, as well as all of the staff and students that dedicated their time to making the night a hit!
