A Spooky Spectacle: Halloween Dance 2013

Last weekend marked one of the most anticipated social events of the year, as Brentwood students donned all manner of terrifying attire for the annual Halloween Dance, hosted by the Student Activities Committee. This dance is one of the biggest commitments of the SAC for the fall term, put together by a smaller committee of students, who are assisted on the day by the bulk of the organization. The SAC is involved in hosting and running student-led events for the school population, and participates in events with international charities. The profits from this year’s Halloween Dance went to Mosquoy, which is a charity responsible for providing education, training and housing to young people from small villages in Peru. Later this year, a group of Brentwood students will be traveling to Peru to assist Mosquoy in their work and to experience Peruvian culture. The dance began with a donation at the door, and then a photo booth run by students from the SAC, where the crazy costumes were captured. The student DJ’s kept the dance floor alive as the lights lit up the ghoulish display. Excellent work was done by the SAC to make sure that Crooks Hall and the McNeill Centre were suitably terrifying, as befitting Halloween, with spider webs, grave stones, swinging skeletons and all other manner of scary decor. Visitors to the school – rowers from Green Lake in Seattle and junior rugby players from England – took part in the dance, a valuable chance for them to socialize with their hosts. Outside, the day student parents hosted a barbeque for the students to keep them full while the dance continued. The dance ended for juniors at 10pm, while the seniors were allowed to stay out until 10:30, after which time the SAC clean up crew moved in to diligently remove the frightening décor. The dance was a great success, and a large sum of money was raised to help Mosquoy and the young people of Peru.
