Adriane Rogers

Adriane Rogers grew up in Richmond, BC, and completed her Bachelor of Education at the University of Victoria. Deciding that she wanted to experience ‘true Canadian winters’, she relocated to Calgary, Alberta, where she spent twenty years in teaching, leadership, and entrepreneurial roles in independent and public schools. Her extensive background in differentiated instruction and learning resource is evident in the collaborative relationships she forms with her students and families. ”No labels. No limits.”Grounded by the ocean, she returned to the West Coast with her family, calling Brentwood home. Ms. Rogers served as the Assistant Houseparent in Whittall House from 2019-2022 and is the proud mum to Noel (Whittall ‘21) and Davis (Whittall ‘23) both attending Queen’s University. She is the Houseparent in Allard House, known to dance her way through playlists during Number 1 inspections. She teaches in the Learning Centre—supporting students with Individualized Education Plans fostering independence and self-advocacy.She completed a Diploma in Independent School Leadership through the Canadian Accredited Independent Schools Association, a Master’s of Educational Leadership, Academic Administration, through Yorkville University and most recently a certificate in Foundations of Care and Practice through The Association of Boarding Schools.When she isn’t in the classroom, you can look for her cheering on the sidelines of the school fields and courts, avidly spectating Hockey Night in Canada, combing the beach for sea glass, hiking the trails of the nearby forests, or finding the next best coffee spot—with Bentley, her Goldendoodle, in tow.
Alex Miller
Field Hockey Coach
Born and raised in the Cowichan Valley, Ms. Miller first joined Brentwood as a day student in Grade 9. While playing at Brentwood, Ms. Miller was also named to the Island Field Hockey Team as well as Team BC. After Brentwood, she went on to attend Brighton University where she played for their field hockey team. Ms. Miller returned to Brentwood in 2019 to coach with former teammate Rachel Reynolds; together they now coach the 1st IV team. The 1st IV team won the bronze at the provincial championships in 2021, which was the first time they had won a medal at Provincials since Ms. Reynolds’s and Ms. Miller’s senior year at Brentwood. She looks forward to continuing to grow the Field Hockey Program.
Alexandria Toporowski
Boarding Faculty Assistant (Hope House); Volleyball Coach

Old Brentonian Alexandria Toporowski joins Brentwood as a Boarding Faculty Assistant in Hope House. Upon graduating in 2018, she pursued volleyball at the University of Waterloo and earned an OUA bronze medal with the team. Her time as a varsity athlete came to a close as she focused on her passion for social service. Equipped with experience in supporting society’s most vulnerable individuals, Alexandria aims to foster empathy, resilience, and growth in others. Ms. Toporowski previously returned to Brentwood during the 2021/22 school year as a coach for the Senior “B” Volleyball and Senior “A” Girls’ Basketball teams. Since then, she has embarked on an exchange program at the University of Sussex in England and concluded her academic endeavours in Waterloo, earning her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Social Development. Alexandria is thrilled to be back on the beautiful west coast. Returning to Brentwood, she hopes to shape a positive experience for current students.
Amanda Mack

Ms Mack is an experienced educator with over a decade of teaching science and holding leadership roles across schools in England, France, and Sweden. Having returned to Canada in 2024, she continues to pursue her passions in science pedagogy and education for sustainable development (ESD), while also serving as a Global Schools Advocate.
Ms. Mack has taught both local curricula and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs and enjoys creating engaging, inquiry-based learning environments that empower students to learn and grow. Prior to teaching, Ms. Mack worked as a medical researcher. Outside the classroom, she enjoys traveling.
Angela Andersen

Angela Andersen was raised on forested family acreage in Metchosin, B.C. This is reflected in her long-term studio focus of ‘tree portraits’. Ms. Andersen’s work appears in collections throughout Canada and the U.S. Her paintings have been curated into the Sooke Fine Arts Show for multiple years, and her piece ‘Ghost’ won ‘Best in Show’ at the Cowichan Valley Fine Arts Show in 2021. A lifelong creative; Ms. Andersen enjoys experimenting with multiple mediums and processes, always striving to connect with and reflect the natural environment of the Island and her off-grid home and studio in West Shawnigan. Her career as an art and art history educator began with a teaching contract at an international high school in Italy. With over 20 years of experience across multiple visual art disciplines, Ms. Andersen’s practice is centred on developing student capacity for community and leadership through creative pursuits. During her time on the Cowichan Valley Arts Council board, she initiated their first annual student art exhibition in the spring of 2020. In 2017 she was awarded the Duncan Business Association Shirley McGuinness Memorial Award for her leadership in public art collaborations in the City of Duncan. Ms. Andersen’s hobbies include researching and engaging in land restoration practices, gardening, foraging, and making natural healing products. She is the proud mom of two young women and loves to ‘dream and scheme’ with her artist husband over morning coffee.
Angelica Lopez-Arzate

Angelica Lopez-Arzate received her Bachelor´s degree in Music with honors from Mexico´s National University and her Master´s in Music from Memorial University of Newfoundland, where she was awarded as a Fellow of the Graduate Studies.She has received multiple awards in piano performance throughout her career and different scholarships to continue with her music education.As a solo pianist, she has performed in different venues in Mexico, Cuba, Bolivia, the USA, and Canada. She has also collaborated as accompanist and musical arranger with music producers in radio and TV.Ms. Lopez-Arzate is passionate in the performance and teaching of music—with the aim of motivating love of music among her students. She is committed to seeking each student’s own voice to motivating their artistic sensitivity and creativity, as well as making musical learning a fun experience.

A member of both the Humanities and Business departments, Blake Gage joined the Brentwood faculty in 2004 after a career in management consulting and as a professional basketball player.Following an undergraduate degree in history from the University of Western Ontario, Mr. Gage realized a life-long goal by playing basketball professionally in a number of different European leagues. Upon his return home, he completed his M.B.A at the University of Victoria with a specialization in Entrepreneurship. He worked locally as a marketing manager before accepting a position as a management consultant in the United States—where he helped establish best practices for organizations in a variety of industries.After two years away, Mr. Gage and his wife Robin made the easy decision to return to Vancouver Island, raise a family, and allow Mr. Gage to pursue his passion for teaching and coaching youth. A graduate of the National Coaching Institute (Level IV), Mr. Gage is often found in the gym working with anyone who shares his love of basketball. The Gages have two children, Dylan (Whittall ‘23) and Zoë (Alex ‘26).
Brian Carr

Born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Brian Carr came to Canada in 1964 with his parents and younger brother, Rory. The Carr family moved onto the Brentwood campus in the fall of 1964—where the senior Mr. Carr served as Houseparent for 19 years. After Brentwood, Brian attended the University of Washington as a rower and fledgling geographer. Graduation from the University of Victoria brought him back to the Cowichan Valley, where he taught at Frances Kelsey Secondary School before answering his primal urge to return to Brentwood—where he promptly became a busy member of the Social Studies Department and key leader within the Brentwood College Rowing Club. Mr. Carr has continued his coaching service and is now Associate of Alumni Relations at the School.Brian’s wife, Leslie Reid Carr, taught Spanish and French at the school and was the Houseparent of Allard House from 2007-19. Their daughter Natalie (2011) and son Aidan (2014) both graduated from Brentwood.
Carly Price

Carly Price is originally from Wales but grew up in Edmonton, Alberta. Her love for the ocean brought her to Vancouver Island, where she completed both a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Education at Vancouver Island University.She brings over 13 years of experience teaching a wide range of subjects to students in Grades 4 to 12, with a particular focus on secondary math and science. Ms. Price is passionate about sparking curiosity and instilling a love of learning in her students. She is also dedicated to helping them develop the skills and habits they need to succeed in high school and beyond.Outside the classroom, Carly enjoys rock climbing, cycling, kayaking, sailing and outdoor education. She is thrilled to be teaching Grade 8 this year and looks forward to getting to know the amazing staff and students at Brentwood.
Claire Allen

After immigrating to Canada from the UK, Claire grew up in Atlantic Canada before relocating to Alberta as a teenager. She completed her B.Ed. at the University of Alberta, Faculté St. Jean, and also holds an M.Ed. in Leadership from Acadia University.Claire began her career teaching French Immersion Social Studies in St. Albert, Alberta. After moving to Calgary, she taught Études sociales, Social Studies, and various French language and literature courses at West Island College. She also, as Head of Student Services, stewarded the creation of the West Island College Student Services Department, after moving on from her role as the Director of International Studies, a position she held for seven years.Claire joined the Brentwood community in the fall of 2023, excited to return to the ocean and a new coast. In her free time—when she is not travelling—she can be found walking with her Sheepadoodle or curled up with a good book.
Clayton Johnston

Seeking a change of pace after teaching for six years on a tiny island in the Bahamas, Mr. Johnston and his wife Kate moved to Brentwood in 1994—and have lived on campus ever since. A graduate of McMaster University (Bachelor of Arts) and the University of Toronto (Master of Divinity and Bachelor of Education), Mr. Johnston has served as an Assistant Houseparent (Privett), Houseparent (Rogers), teacher of philosophy and humanities, Head of Basketball, Director of Residence, and Director of Campus Life. In 2006, he was appointed Director of Admissions. Regardless of his job description, Mr. Johnston has remained loyal to his great passion: helping Brentwood to grow as a giving and caring community of future leaders and stewards.
Cody Gibson

Mr. Gibson, is an experienced world educator and traveller with thirty-four countries and counting; mainly in Vietnam, Guatemala and Mexico. His time overseas provided constant challenges and joys and he hopes to bring his experience to students here at Brentwood.If you can’t find Mr. Gibson on his standard rounds on campus, then seek him outside in the forest—climbing rocks, looking at moss, hiking the west coast trail and generally galavanting around the island that he grew up on and loves. He is excited to offer classes that deliver an exciting time, lots of debate, and a widening of horizons.
Conrad Alscher

Conrad Alscher is a Brentwood College School alumn, having graduated from the School in 2013. After completing a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Victoria, Mr. Alscher worked with youth at various non-profit organizations before making tennis coaching his career.
Tennis has been a large part of Mr. Alscher’s life since he was 8 years old. He competed at a national level throughout his junior tennis career and continues to train with top tennis players in the province.
Owning the largest tennis coaching business in the Cowichan Valley, Mr. Alscher is dedicated to growing the sport of tennis at Brentwood and throughout the region. He is passionate about ensuring tennis players have the best experience possible by improving their skills while participating in an enjoyable learning process.
Dan Norman
Mathematics Teacher; Outdoor Pursuits Coach

Dan Norman was born and raised in Toronto, but quickly left. He studied mathematics at the University of Western Ontario and education at the University of Ottawa. During this time, he trained and competed in the sport of whitewater canoe slalom, first qualifying for the Canadian National Team in 1988. In 1992, he represented Canada at the Barcelona Olympic Games. His involvement in competitive kayaking brought him to British Columbia and his interest in the outdoors became a cornerstone of his personal and professional life.Since 2001, in addition to mathematics, Mr. Norman has taught the Outdoor Pursuits Program at Brentwood College School. His passion for the west coast environment drives him to take students to beautiful places all over Vancouver Island. His preferred modes of transportation are human-powered and include skis, snowboards, sea kayaks, canoes, bicycles, and hiking boots.Mr. Norman likes very few things more than goofing around in paddle-powered boats—canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. His current challenges include developing and delivering outdoor and experiential education at Brentwood. In his leisure, he and his family spend as much time as possible in remote wilderness locations, and work hard to minimize their footprint on this beautiful island they call home.
Daryl Stevens

Mr. Stevens brings to Brentwood an understanding of ‘Island life’ from his hometown of Campbell River, and a global perspective from his work at international schools in Saudi Arabia and Ukraine. He believes that children are sacred and deserve the best from the adults entrusted with their care.In support of his desire to use research-based understandings to inform his practice, Daryl completed his Education Doctorate, School Leadership in International Contexts through Western University. His years as an educator in Canada and abroad include roles as a classroom teacher, sports coach, English Department Chair, district-level Literacy Coach, and Safety and Facilities Coordinator. He has also taught doctoral courses and mentored doctoral students at Western University.After years of living vicariously through his boys while they boarded at Brentwood, Daryl is elated to be a member of the Brentwood faculty. He is also delighted to be back on the West Coast, where he and his wife and three sons like to soak up all of the outdoor activities the Island has to offer.
David Calder
Head of Rowing

As a member of the Brentwood class of 1996 (Privett House), David Calder is no stranger to our school. Mr. Calder went on after graduation to represent Canada, rowing internationally at four Olympic Games, and retiring from competition after the 2012 London Olympics. In his racing career, he won numerous World Cup medals in the 2- and 8+, the World Championships in the Jr 2- and the Sr 8+, and an Olympic Silver Medal in the 2- at the 2008 Beijing Olympics—with fellow Brentonian Scott Frandsen (‘98).
David Cowie
Rugby, Strength & Conditioning coach

Mr. Cowie, aside from being a current staff member, as well as Brentwood alumni, grew up around the school. The son of long time faculty member Mr. Steven Cowie, his love of rugby – instilled in him by his father – grew through his five years spent at Brentwood, culminating in his playing for the school’s BC Provincial Championship winning 1st XV. After graduating from Brentwood, Mr. Cowie attended Uvic where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree while playing rugby for Uvic, and then for his hometown club of Cowichan. Following his university studies he moved to Auckland, New Zealand, where he spent a short stint playing rugby for Auckland Suburbs. It was here that he discovered his penchant for coaching and training. Upon returning to Vancouver Island in 2012, Mr. Cowie began coaching rugby back at Brentwood, while simultaneously earning his personal trainer’s certificate (CPT), as well as his strength and conditioning certification (CSCS). He has since helped develop Brentwood’s strength and conditioning program, while also working in Victoria, B.C as a strength and conditioning trainer, and consultant.
David Lakirovich
David Lakirovich began his violin studies at the age of three in Brisbane, Australia, under his father, Jacob Lakirovich. He has studied with renowned teachers, including Shmuel Ashkenasi, Vadim Gluzman, and William Preucil, and has performed as a soloist in international venues such as Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, the Bronfman Auditorium in Tel Aviv, and the Stradivari Museum in Cremona.
David has served as Associate Concertmaster of the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra, Guest Concertmaster of the Indianapolis Symphony, and is currently Assistant Concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. In addition to performing, David taught at Mount Royal University and University of Calgary, and is Professor of Violin at the Vancouver Academy of Music. He is the Program and Operations Director of the Vancouver Island Music Academy, which he co-founded in 2021.
Doug Branchflower
History/Social Studies Teacher; Rugby Coach

Mr. Branchflower received his B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan and completed his B.Ed. at the University of Alberta. He has taught several business and humanities courses, including economics, entrepreneurship, history, law, psychology, and English. He is currently teaching AP World History and Social Studies 10. Having both attended and worked at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, Mr. Branchflower is a boarding school stalwart. Before coming to Brentwood, he served as the Director of Athletics and Head of Humanities at Notre Dame, where he also held the position of Houseparent for several years. Mr. Branchflower is an accomplished rugby coach, working with both men’s and women’s school, regional, and provincial teams in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Alberta, and BC, as well as being both an assistant coach and manager of Rugby Canada’s U17/U18 men’s programs. Mr. Branchflower is also a coach educator for World Rugby, Rugby Canada, and the National Coaching Certification Program, holding both a Level 3 coaching certificate and an Advanced Coaching Diploma from the NCCP.
Drew Langer

Growing up on the beautiful coastal shores of British Columbia, Mr. Langer graduated from the University of Victoria with a B.A. in Recreation & Health Education and then completed his NSCA-CSCS (Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist) qualification. During his 12 years of playing rugby, he was part of provincial and national titles at the high school, university, and regional levels. Mr. Langer is the heartbeat of the Eldon & Anne Foote Athletic Centre as the Facility Manager, creating memorable experiences for both students and staff throughout the year. He is also the lead coach of the Brentwood Cross Training Program, helping high school students learn healthy fitness habits.
Edna Widenmaier
Director of Arts; English Teacher; Musical Director; Theatre Manager of the T. Gil Bunch Centre for Performing Arts

A graduate of the Master of English and Drama (Massey College, the University of Toronto, and the Drama Centre in London, England), Edna Widenmaier has enjoyed over four decades of teaching experience in English, musical, and theatre. After several years in ‘the real business’, including management of Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto and Canadian Place Theatre in Stratford, she began her teaching career in Vancouver. Since joining the Brentwood faculty in 1990, Mrs. Widenmaier tap-danced among and between the roles of teacher of English, drama, and musical theatre, and as Head of the English Department, before her present appointment as the Brentwood Director of Arts.Her experience as a setter of exams for the Ministry of Education and a reader and faculty consultant for the College Board supports her passion for teaching Advanced Placement English Literature and her obsession as a “Bardologist” (an excessive admirer of all things Shakespeare!). Mrs. Widenmaier also directs and produces the annual Brentwood spring musical. At home, in the summer, she enjoys puttering in the garden, reading, watching the stars.
Emily Carroll

Ms Carroll was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. She graduated university and accepted a teaching position at an international school in Dubai – this sparked an interest in pursuing teaching as a career. She went back to Canada to complete her Bachelor of Education and then accepted a teaching position at Sunway International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This school taught the Ontario curriculum. She was there for six years in the capacity of science and Health and Physical Education teacher for grades 7 – 11. She also coached volleyball, swim team, fitness club and was the Student Council advisor. Ms Carroll then moved to California to work at Silicon Valley International School, formerly Alto International School. This school taught the IB continuum curriculum. She taught there for five years in the capacity of Science and HPE teacher for grades 7- 10 and specifically DP Biology and DP Chemistry for grades 11 and 12 of the IB programme. She fuelled her love of the outdoors by being the Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader with the specific role of leading the Adventurous Journey. In her spare time, she is an avid hiker and camper and also loves a good coffee with a good book.
Emily Singh

While growing up in Kitchener, Ontario, Ms. Singh discovered her love for education and youth involvement early on. She has led numerous summer camps and pursued her kinesiology major with a particular interest in youth movement. The lasting impact that exceptional educators had on her life helped her to realize that she wanted to contribute to the growth that happens in an educational environment. An explorer at heart, Ms. Singh moved to New Brunswick to kick off her teaching journey. She is excited to join the Brentwood Family on this new adventure and explore some of the natural beauty of the west coast while she’s at it. In her free time, Ms. Singh enjoys spending time outdoors, playing board games, and scrolling through the local SPCA websites to admire all the furry friends.
Erin Stevens
Metamorphosis 9 (Science) and Career Life teacher

Ms Stevens is an outdoor-loving Island Girl at her core, a former international educator, and an active mother often found hiking, mountain biking, paddling, or skiing with her family. Her 29 years in education have included an exciting, eclectic mix of positions, which fits well with her pursuit of constant improvement through change. Ms Stevens has a Bachelor’s degree in Vertebrate Physiology with a teaching concentration in Chemistry and a teaching certificate from UVic’s Post-Degree Professional Program.She is about to enjoy her third year with the Metamorphosis 9 team, enthusiastically intertwining Science, Social Studies, and Design to look at sustainability through multiple lenses. Prior to moving to Mill Bay in 2019, she fulfilled a range of traditional and non-traditional educational roles in BC, Saudi Arabia, and Ukraine. These included middle and high school math and science teacher, Private Math Consultant, Preschool Coordinator, Distributed Learning Facilitator, and District Gifted Resource Teacher.As a parent of three Old Brentonians, two boarders and one day student, she knows that families living at a distance have increased peace of mind when they know that their child’s individuality is being fostered by caring mentors. She is honoured to be part of the village of adults at Brentwood entrusted to guide, encourage, and in turn be inspired by our students.

Fabiana Gutierrez brings a vibrant flair to her role as an educator, with a background that spans the globe. With a family from Venezuela and Spain, Ms. Gutierrez grew up in the warmth of Saudi Arabia before embracing the chillier climate of Calgary, AB, to pursue her studies. She earned both a Bachelor of Science in General Mathematics and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary, setting the stage for her teaching career. Her high school years at Brentwood College School, where she was a proud member of Mackenzie House, were formative in shaping her desire to come for Phil Smith’s job. Now, Fabiana is excited to teach Mathematics 10 and Pre-Calculus 11, combining her enthusiasm for mathematics with her love for Brentwood. When not in the classroom, you can find her cheering for Real Madrid, indulging in musical theatre and dance, or perfecting her golf swing. Fabiana’s diverse experiences and appreciation for cultural variety enrich her approach to teaching and life, making her a bubbly, engaging, and happy presence.

Gabby Bashizi, an Atlanta native with international parents, embraced her unique background by earning her B.A. in Paris. There, she enjoyed accessible public transportation, historic architecture, and a stunning Olympic Games. When she’s not at work, she’s likely running half-marathons, enjoying the fresh air, and soaking up the bright yellow sun. Garth Chalmers

Born and raised in Toronto, Mr. Chalmers studied geography and biology at Queen’s University then completed his B.Ed. at U of T. He moved to Mexico for his first teaching position at an English school in Torreon. Mr. Chalmers then returned from Torreon to take up a teaching position at the University of Toronto Schools—where he taught geography, developed and coordinated experiential education programs, and was Department Coordinator of Canadian and World Studies. In 2010, Garth moved into an administrative role as Director of Admissions. Later, in 2016, he was appointed Vice Principal. Mr. Chalmers joined Brentwood as Head of School in July 2024.
Giselle Lawrence

Giselle Lawrence was born and raised in Peru. She holds a BSc and an Engineering Title from Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru (PUCP), and, as a British Government Scholar, she obtained an MSc from University of Wales, UK. She worked as an engineer for more than a decade in different projects in South America and taught engineering courses at PUCP. She obtained her B.Ed from UBC and has taught mostly physics and calculus but she also had the opportunity of teaching Spanish, earth science and geography. She has received the Canadian Association of Physicists Award for excellence in teaching physics. This award recognized not only her innovative approach to teaching but also her efforts in support of the training of future science teachers as a sessional lecturer in the Faculty of Education of the University of British Columbia—and her volunteer efforts in support of the professional development of science teachers in BC and Peru.Currently, Ms. Lawrence is very happy sharing her passion for learning with science students at Brentwood. When not thinking of teaching, you can find her spending time with her husband and son. Together they enjoy very much supporting their favourite football teams, playing music, and taking care of their dog Lola and cat Diego.
Graeme Campbell

Mr. Campbell grew up in Sooke, BC, and Ottawa, Ontario, where he studied Computer Systems Engineering at Carleton University and earned his Bachelor of Education at the University of Ottawa. He later completed a Master of Educational Leadership at Vancouver Island University with a focus on educational technology. He loves integrating tech in the classroom. Mr. Campbell has been teaching at independent schools on the west coast for 16 years, and is thrilled to be returning to Brentwood College School. Mr. Campbell teaches Mathematics and Programming.He loves life on the coast and can be found spending time with his wife and young daughter camping, travelling, and exploring playgrounds and ice cream shops all over the Island. He also enjoys reading and playing Dungeons & Dragons.
Gustavo Verna
Squash Coach
Born in Buenos Aires, Mr. Verna’s early sporting life revolved around rugby and squash. In 1976, he was lured to Victoria, BC, after playing against a Canadian rugby squad that was touring Argentina. Mr. Verna enrolled at the University of Victoria and played varsity and club rugby while he pursued his Bachelor’s Degree in Human Performance. He also found the time, energy, and patience to play competitive squash and soccer, participate in mini-triathlons, and serve as program director for the YMCA. It was through rugby, not squash, that Mr. Verna came to Brentwood. In 2001, at the suggestion of rugby ‘mate’, Mr. Tony Medina (former Athletics Director of Brentwood), Mr. Verna applied for the newly vacated position of Squash Coach. He continues to coach, and has also started a community league that gives local players the opportunity to play squash in what he considers to be the ‘finest courts on the Island’. Mr. Verna has two sons and is the co-owner of the Quadra 24-Hour Sports Club. Mr. Verna holds his NCCP Level 3 coaching certification plus his Level 3 Canadian Squash certification.
Hank Panek
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Coach
Henry (Hank) Panek, comes from a Carlson Gracie Sr lineage under 8th Degree Black Belt Professor Marcus Soares. Hank is his 16th student in Canada to receive his Black Belt and has trained under him since 1999. In addition to holding a Brown Belt in Judo, Mr. Panek has been in the fitness industry for more than 40 years and is responsible for introducing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the Cowichan Valley in 2008. Combining his fitness expertise and Judo accomplishments, Mr. Panek’s experiences have allowed him the ability to instruct Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the highest levels.
Harold Wardrop
Director of Teaching and Learning, Mathematics

Born and raised in Ontario, Mr. Wardrop received his B.Sc. with a major in mathematics at the University of British Columbia. At Simon Fraser University, he completed his professional teaching certification and a post-baccalaureate education diploma—then met his lovely wife, Sharon. After eight years of teaching mathematics in Surrey, he joined the Brentwood faculty in 2002. In addition to his teaching, Mr. Wardrop has also developed and co-authored textbooks for Grades 10, 11, and 12—all currently used across Western Canada and the Territories. He is a passionate mathematics teacher and in 2011 received a National Prime Minister’s Award for teaching excellence. He spent 14 years as Brentwood’s Mathematics Department Head, then—in 2020—started a new chapter in his career as the Director of Teaching and Learning. He is the proud father of two Brentwood graduates—Caitlin (Mack ‘16) and Connor (Ellis ‘18)—and, in his free time, he enjoys ripping up the trails in the Cowichan Valley on his mountain bike.

Isaiah Lansdowne

With enthusiasm and a TESOL certificate in hand, Isaiah Lansdowne’s first teaching experience was in Chiapas, Mexico, as a teenager. When he saw that teaching could be fun and rewarding, he returned to school in BC and completed his first steps towards becoming a teacher in Canada with a Bachelor of Arts degree. After dabbling in the business world while living in Toronto, Mr. Lansdowne returned to BC and became the Activity Coordinator and a Houseparent at another boarding school in the Cowichan Valley. He quite enjoyed this experience and only left his roles to complete his Bachelor of Education degree.Since graduating with his B. Ed., Mr. Lansdowne has had a number of rewarding teaching experiences which have included teaching in different communities in Nunavut. He also has years of experience as a Support Teacher in BC. He is excited to support students as a teacher in the Learning Centre here at Brentwood. Mr. Lansdowne believes in lifelong learning and recently completed a certificate in Inclusive Education. When not teaching, he enjoys spending time outdoors with his two dogs, two daughters, and one wife.
Ivana Cappelletto

Ivana Cappelletto brings a wealth of experience in education and the arts, having taught Foundation Art at institutions such as Emily Carr University, Vancouver Film School, Simon Fraser University, Langara College, and the University of Alberta. Holding a BA from the University of Alberta and a master;s degree in Visual Communications from the European Institute of Design in Milan, Italy, Ms. Cappelletto also spent 11 years as an art director and designer in Milan. Throughout her career, painting, drawing, and the fundamentals of art have always been central to her style of work.Ivana Cappelletto is dedicated to inspiring and mentoring the next generation of creatives. She has successfully managed collaborations between seasoned professionals and emerging talent, fostering a supportive environment for growth.
Jacob Lakirovich
Jacob Lakirovich holds a Diploma of Graduation from the State College of Music, Baku, USSR, a Professional Studies Certificate from the Music Academy Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Israel, and a Concert Artist Certificate from the Conservatorium of Music Luzern, Switzerland. His principal teachers were Rami Shevelov, Yair Kless, Boris Goldstein, and Rudolph Baumgartner.
Mr. Lakirovich has held positions in numerous orchestras in Europe, Australia, and Canada, including Heidelberg Opera Orchestra, Germany, Principal Violinist for the Queensland Pops and Theatre Orchestras, Brisbane, Australia, and Concertmaster for the Canadian Chamber Academy Orchestra. He appeared as a soloist and conducted chamber and youth symphony orchestras in many European countries, as well as Israel, Australia, and Canada, which were broadcast on radio and TV, including the Radio Vatican.
He was a Co-Founder and Director of the Stoliarsky School of Music, Brisbane and Sydney, Australia, and a former faculty member at Sydney Conservatorium University of Wollongong, Australia, and was involved in developing and teaching a program for gifted youth. He has led many workshops on Violin Technique and Interpretation at international music festivals in Germany, Italy, Australia, and Canada. He is a member Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association and is also a member of the Royal Conservatory of Music Examiner College and conducts string examinations across Canada.
Jacqueline Albinati

Through her love of language, culture, travel, children, and her sense of adventure, Ms. Albinati has moved around the country throughout the past 27 years as a teacher. She has taught in four independent schools. Throughout her career, she has been a downhill ski coach, basketball, field hockey, and rugby coach; a Duke of Edinburgh leader; and both International Baccalaureate and Round Square coordinator—which allowed her to travel the world with her students. Ms. Albinati is a curious and self-motivated leader passionate about languages, travel, and service in the pursuit of continual learning, the promotion of others, and the development of global citizenship. She has completed a marathon, three half-marathons, and a triathlon. Her most recent hiking adventures were in Iceland, Peru, and Japan. She is the proud mother of daughter Sophie and is crazy about her two doodles, Daisy and Aloha.

She previously taught Mandarin and coached basketball at Shawnigan Lake School before joining Brentwood College School.Ms. Yang’s teaching philosophy emphasizes experiential learning and student-centered approaches that foster linguistic proficiency, cultural understanding, and global citizenship. Outside the classroom, she enjoys traveling, exploring different cultures, and learning new languages.

His teaching stints have been in Eabamet Lake (Fort Hope), Ontario, Inuvik, NT, Istanbul, Canmore, Damascus, Syria, Bratislava, Slovakia, Sofia, Bulgaria, and George Town, Cayman Islands.Mr. Szeryk has three truly wonderful 3rd-culture kids. His older daughter is attending the University of Waterloo, his younger daughter is attending her second year at Dalhousie University in Halifax, and his son will be enjoying his 3rd year here at Brentwood.

Born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Jenna Warner is a prairie girl at heart. After earning her Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education degrees from the University of Manitoba, she moved west to join the Brentwood Family to teach science and biology. A sports fanatic from childhood, Mrs. Warner played many sports, but field hockey is her passion. She represented the University of Manitoba, and played and coached field hockey at both the Western Canada Summer Games and Canada Summer Games. She currently enjoys living on campus in Alexandra House with her husband, children, and dog.

Mrs. Gage was born and raised in Toronto. She attended Queen’s University where she obtained her undergraduate degree and received a double major in French and Geography. She completed a gap year where she worked and traveled in Southeast Asia and Australia before going back to Queen’s to receive her B.Ed. Mrs. Gage began her career teaching high school French in Norwich, United Kingdom. She moved to Vancouver Island in 2005—where she worked in Project Management, but a passion for teaching brought her back to the classroom. For the past twelve years, she has been teaching French Immersion at the Middle School level with the Sooke School District.Mrs. Gage is excited to be a part of the Modern Languages Department at Brentwood and to share her love of French language through music and culture. She strives to create a fun classroom community where her students feel safe and comfortable taking risks.When not working, she can be found hiking at Thetis Lake, doing yoga, painting, or curled up with a good book. Mrs. Gage and her husband Brecon are the proud parents of daughters Emily (Alex ’27) and Nyah, and their Goldendoodle Cooper.
Jenny Crane

Jenny Crane is a cellist—teaching and performing—currently based in the Cowichan Valley, BC. She began playing the cello at age six, studying with John Kadz in Calgary, Alberta, through Mount Royal University’s Conservatory program. During her early training, Jenny participated extensively in provincial, national, and international festivals and competitions, receiving outstanding critical recognition and performing with leading artists through programs such as Morningside Music Bridge. These experiences included international performances in Europe, where she had the opportunity to perform for composer Krzysztof Penderecki.Ms. Crane holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Université de Montréal, where she studied privately with Johanne Perron, and completed her Master’s degree in 2018 at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, studying with Jennifer Culp. In 2023, she was an Artist in Residence at Arts Commons in Calgary, developing and presenting original interdisciplinary performances while collaborating with artists across disciplines.Drawn to the Cowichan Valley by its strong sense of community and connection to the natural environment, Ms. Crane has chosen to make her home there and actively contribute to the region’s cultural life. Performing and teaching in a small-town setting has deepened her belief in the power of live classical music as a shared, human experience. Alongside traditional performance, she is interested in exploring the relationship between sound, movement, and well-being, integrating her background in music with interests in physical awareness, fitness, and sound-based practices. Through performance, teaching, and community engagement, Jenny Crane is committed to building meaningful artistic connections and using music as a tool for growth, healing, and positive change.
Jessica Beausoliel

Jess joins the Brentwood University Counselling and Social Studies team from Ontario. After graduating from Brock University in St. Catherines with a B.A. in Human Geography and Spanish, she lived in Madrid and wandered Europe before deciding to complete her B.Ed. at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. She was a Guidance Counsellor and High School teacher on a reserve in northern Saskatchewan for two years, and left the -55 degree winters to take on a Guidance role at Toronto French School. Still not satisfied with the bitter cold weather, she sold her parka and fled west. Jess is passionate about all things sports, and has coached girls volleyball for the last three years. When she isn’t teaching, you can find her in a kayak, yoga studio, or looking for the next place to travel to explore volcanoes and other geothermal activity.
Jessica Sevick

Jessica is a Canadian rower and Olympian. She holds an undergraduate degree in Civil-Biomedical Engineering from the University of Alberta, and a master’s degree in Experimental Medicine, where she also competed for the UBC Thuderbird’s rowing team. Jessica’s rowing career highlights including winning gold in the single sculls at the 2019 Pan American Games, competing in the women’s double sculls at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, contributing to multiple World Cup and and World Championship podium finishes as a member of Canada’s women’s eight, and helping Team Canada capture a silver medal in the women’s eight at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Jill Fougner
Head of Volleyball, Sr Girls' Soccer Coach

Born and raised in Victoria, BC, Jill Fougner competed in a wide variety of sports as a child. Her teenage years were divided busily between softball and volleyball. Ms. Fougner was a member of Team BC in volleyball for four years. At 18, she was selected to join Canada’s National Volleyball Team; shortly after she relocated to the national training centre in Ottawa, she represented Canada in the 1982 World Volleyball Championships in Peru. After playing for the Canadian National Team, Ms. Fougner competed for the University of Victoria where she was named to the USports All-Canadian Team four times. She was also named Best Setter at the 1989 Canadian National Championships. On graduating from the University of Victoria with a degree in psychology, she moved to Australia to play professional beach volleyball. She then returned to Victoria where she headed up the UVic Varsity Volleyball coaching staff for seven years. Ms. Fougner joined the Brentwood coaching staff in 2000, and became Assistant Houseparent of Gwynneth House (now Allard) in 2001. She is currently the Brentwood Volleyball Program Head. Jill has coached the Brentwood Senior Girls’ Volleyball Team to nine Island Championship titles, two Bronze, and back-to-back Provincial Championship titles. She was the assistant coach for Team BC in 2007, which won the Gold Medal at the Western Canada Games and finished 4th at the 2009 Canada Summer Games; she was named Volleyball Coach of the Year for Vancouver Island (2006/07). She has also assisted with the Senior Girls’ Soccer Team since 2005.
Jillian Napier

As the daughter of a headmaster and as a student, coach, teacher and houseparent, Jillian has had the good fortune of being part of eight CAIS school communities in her lifetime. Jillian graduated from Wilfrid Laurier with her B.B.A. Co-op degree and proceeded to investigate the teaching life at Shawnigan Lake School as a junior faculty member. She enjoyed it so much that she returned to Ontario to earn a B.Ed. at Brock University and then taught at Trinity College School in Port Hope, Ontario. Needless to say, she couldn’t shake the West Coast bug, so she and her husband, Jim Ganley, moved back out to the island where Jillian pursued her MBA at UVic and was an assistant coach with the Vikes Women’s Basketball CIS Championship team. Upon receiving her MBA, she spent some time in the e-commerce and consulting industries then switched her main focus to family life and raising three children, Jack, Jensa and Jay, while maintaining a local consulting practice in her spare time. Jillian brings 3 decades of coaching experience (in basketball, rugby, soccer, rowing and volleyball) to the Brentwood athletic program, ranging from the community level through to elite and provincial development programs. Despite her strapping 5’2” frame, as an athlete, she competed at the university level in rugby, rowing and basketball. Now, a little older and a lot more sensible, you can find her on the hardcourt coaching rather than playing – a transition for which her knees and ankles are deeply grateful.

Parents with a sense of adventure took Jim Ganley from his childhood home in Peterborough, Ontario, to encounter adolescence in Kingston, Jamaica and Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Along the way, he attended or taught at the International School of Tanganyika, Lakefield College, Trinity College, and Shawnigan Lake School. In between, he developed a passion for travelling backwards over water in narrow shells which he pursued energetically for 30 years. Jim his wife, Jillian Napier, an economics teacher and girls basketball coach, are raising their three children – two Brentwood alumni – in the peaceful beauty of the Cowichan Valley. Growing concern for the environmental legacy we are leaving our children and grandchildren has led Jim to enthusiastically lead the Brentwood Environmental Action Team (BEAT).
Joe Lyons

Joseph Lyons discovered his love for clay as a child, in Seattle. As an adult, he attended classes at Pottery Northwest for years before moving to Kauai, Hawaii, where became the apprentice to master potter Dean McRaine. In 2016, Mr. Lyons immigrated to Canada to attend Vancouver Island University. He graduated with honors and a degree in Visual Arts in 2020 and took up a position as Artist-in-Residence at Nanaimo Ceramic Arts. Mr. Lyons enjoys making pots in his home studio while raising two kids in an artistic household with his partner—a children’s book publisher, author, and illustrator.
Jordan Warner

Growing up in Roblin, Manitoba, Jordan Warner played a variety of sports in his youth, with his main focus on hockey and baseball. After graduating from high school as one of the top scholar/athletes in Manitoba, he obtained both his Bachelor of Science (Math and Physics) and Bachelor of Education with distinction from the University of Manitoba. He arrived at Brentwood in the fall of 2007 to teach mathematics and coach. On sport afternoons, he can be found coaching junior boys basketball or at the golf course with the Brentwood Golf Team. In his spare time, he can often be found at the hockey rink or baseball diamond coaching one of his children’s teams. A former Assistant Houseparent of Rogers House, Mr. Warner currently lives with his wife and three children in Alexandra House.
Julia Folk

Julia, a Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC), grew up in Regina, Saskatchewan, and knew prairie wheat and canola fields to be home until moving to Vancouver Island in 2013—where she swapped her down coat for a raincoat, and winter Sorels for rugby boots. At UVic, she earned her Bachelor of Science with a combined major in biology and psychology, and later graduated from City University of Seattle with her Master’s in Counselling. Her approach to counselling recognizes the biopsychosocial model of personal health, and in that way, she remains person-centered in her practice.Julia has recently moved to the Cowichan Valley and is still shocked every year by the beautiful colours of spring, and the length of the fall seasons on Vancouver Island. She tries to be out in the trees with her St. Bernard whenever she can.

Julie teaches Business and Economics at Brentwood College School and also teaches in the co-curricular Robotics program. Prior to joining Brentwood, she served as a DP Coordinator and taught IB Economics and Mathematics, with a focus on project-based, interdisciplinary learning.Originally from Waterdown, Ontario, Julie has three children—two boys and a girl. As a lifelong learner and educator, she tutored university students for over 15 years in subjects including Statistics, Accounting, Corporate Finance, Economics, and Game Theory. She also co-founded a tech-based startup, helping to program its website, and enjoys talking about real estate and investing.Outside the classroom, Julie loves sewing, speed hiking through the forest, and spending time at the beach. Justine Backlund

Ms. Backlund is from BC’s Lower Mainland but has spent as many summers as she can remember exploring coastal waters by sailboat. She completed her B.F.A. at Simon Fraser University, receiving the Praxis Centre for Screenwriting Award for her final project. By her love of storytelling, Ms. Backlund was propelled to complete a Masters in Creative Writing at the University of Oxford. She is most interested in the power writing has to connect us and hopes to share her love of language arts with her students. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, creative writing, reading, and cold-water swimming.
Karen Hedquist

Growing up in the beautiful Comox Valley, Karen Hedquist recognizes the benefits of living where forests and oceans are within walking distance. After receiving a B.A. in English and History at the University of Victoria, living and teaching in Japan, bicycling from Istanbul to Stockholm, and earning her Master’s degree in TESOL at the University of Edinburgh, the west coast called her back.In 2002 Ms. Hedquist moved to Mill Bay and Brentwood College School, discovering the magic of boarding schools. She and her patient husband moved their family onto campus in 2010, where their two daughters have grown up in Hope House amongst the other campus families and hundreds of teenagers in a community surrounded by nature. A passionate English, English First Peoples, English Language Learning teacher and Houseparent, Ms. Hedquist’s greatest accomplishments and favourite people are her children.
Kate Coull
Mathematics Teacher

After growing up in Peterborough, Ontario, and receiving her B.Sc (University of Guelph) and B.Ed (Queen’s University), Ms. Coull taught mathematics and calculus for three years in Ontario before making the decision to move to New Zealand in 1987. What was initially to be a two-year teaching experience in New Zealand followed by world travel, ended up becoming a 10-year stay in NZ. During that time, Ms. Coull taught senior mathematics and calculus and helped to produce a new Form 5 Math textbook along with a team of three other math teachers. On a family holiday to Vancouver Island in 1991, Kate first visited the Brentwood campus. Returning to Canada in 1997, Kate taught for eight years at Queen Margaret’s School—where she was Head of the Mathematics Department and Director of Residence. In 2005 Kate joined Aspengrove School, an independent IB school on the Island, and over five years there, helped to initiate many new programs in addition to teaching math, AP Calculus, and running the University Counselling and Outdoor Education programs. Passionate about math, Kate also enjoys running, hiking, kayaking, and spending time with her family—including her son Ben, a Brentwood “Lifer” and a graduate of 2010.
Kim Waugh

Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Ms. Waugh attended the University of Victoria where she completed both her B.A. in history and geography and received her teaching certificate through the Post-Degree Professional Program. She began her career in the Victoria School District where she gained valuable experience teaching a variety of subjects, including history, English, math, and PE—to students from Grades 6 to 12. Looking for an opportunity to teach an international program, Ms. Waugh made the move to Glenlyon Norfolk School to teach history, English, and math. She soon moved into the role of Teacher-Librarian and then added Personal Project Coordinator and Round Square Coordinator to her responsibilities. Ms. Waugh arrived at Brentwood in the role of Grade 8 Program Coordinator and Humanities Teacher. She is passionate about travel, service, and the outdoors, and is a proud mother to Megan and Alex.
Leyla Haslebacher

With a background in design, art, and industrial arts, Leyla Haslebacher has spent many years teaching and inspiring individuals to explore the intersection of artistic expression and practical skill. Leyla comes to Brentwood with the belief that everyone has the capacity to transform their ideas into reality. From early childhood, she has been passionate about creating things from basic materials and this passion has only grown over the years. One of her favourite things in the world is to act as a guide, helping students discover their innate creativity.Ms. Haslebacher is a passionate educator with a deep commitment to fostering creativity and craftsmanship in students. Through hands-on lessons and a focus on problem-solving, she encourages students to develop both their technical abilities and their unique creative voices. Whether working with students in the Design Lab, guiding them through design concepts, or teaching the fundamentals of woodcraft, Ms. Haslebacher brings a wealth of experience and a dedication to helping each student unlock their full potential.
Liam Sullivan

Liam Sullivan began working at Brentwood College School in 2007, taking a position as an Assistant Houseparent in Whittall House—where he worked for three years while teaching Social Studies and coaching the Junior Boys’ Basketball Team. Mr. Sullivan accepted the Houseparent of Ellis House role in 2010 and continued in that role until 2018. After a year of living off-campus, Mr. Sullivan took the role of Deputy Head-Student Life in 2019 and has returned to live on the campus that he has grown to love. Father to Brendan ‘18 and Abby ‘21, he is eternally grateful for what the School has been able to provide him both personally and professionally.

Seeking a change in lifestyle, she relocated to Mill Bay, where she embraced a new chapter of her life.Ms. Stewart joined Brentwood to share her passion for science with the School’s vibrant community. As a member of the Science Faculty, she supports teachers and students in their science labs, ensuring a hands-on and engaging learning experience. Originally from Ireland and England, with a background in caring for children from the cradle up, Lorraine Walsh worked in many areas from catering to office, daycare to Teacher’s Assistant. Mrs. Walsh lived in Ontario for three years before moving to Vancouver Island with her family. Like all staff at Brentwood, she is passionate about education and encouraging the students in our care to take advantage of all that we have to offer, in the hope that we help prepare them to ‘take on the world’ when they leave us.Mrs. Walsh worked at Brentwood Reception before moving into the Admissions Department ten years ago—so she knows the School inside and out.
Lucre Balbiani

Lucre Balbiani was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She moved to Canada in 2002 upon completing her undergraduate degree in legal translation from the Argentine Catholic University. After settling in the Cowichan Valley, Lucre started both a family and her translation business. In 2017, Ms. Balbiani decided to return to school to become a teacher and hasn’t looked back since. As a Spanish teacher, she strives to inject fun, purposeful activities into her lessons that highlight the connection between language and culture. She uses a variety of cultural pieces such as Day of the Dead activities or Kizomba dance workshops as experiential platforms for her students to develop their language skills. Lucre is a strong advocate of the growth mindset philosophy, which currently has her pursuing French language studies.
Malcolm Phillips

Malcolm Phillips is an experienced international educator and coach with over 15 years of teaching across South Africa, Canada, and the UAE. Born and raised in Durban, South Africa, he moved to Canada in 2016 and taught at Rundle College in Calgary. After obtaining Canadian citizenship, he moved abroad to pursue international teaching opportunities in Abu Dhabi.In the UAE, Mr. Phillips served as Head of Mathematics at the Canadian International School and most recently as Head of Grade 7 at Raha International School. He is certified to teach in the South African, Alberta (Canada), and IB Middle Years Program frameworks and is known for his strong leadership, dedication to student development, and collaborative approach to education.As a passionate sportsman and coach, Mr. Phillips has led school teams in rugby, football, swimming, volleyball, and cricket to regional and provincial championships. He is also the current Head Coach of Team UAE Underwater Hockey, having previously represented both South Africa and Canada at the international level. He sits on the CMAS College of Coaches and Referees.Outside of his professional life, Mr. Phillips enjoys golf, padel, pickleball, and surfing. He is excited to bring his experience, energy, and enthusiasm to the classroom and sports field as part of a vibrant school community.
Mandy Marchak
Rugby Coach

Ms. Marchak played a prominent role in Rugby Canada’s fifteens and sevens programs during her career. She began playing in Manitoba and was inducted into the Manitoba Rugby Hall of Fame in 2017 following an outstanding career. She moved from Winnipeg to British Columbia to play with Capilano in 2004, and in 2009 she was named BC Premier Player of the Year. Marchak relocated to England for three years to play with the historic club Saracens RFC in London. On the 15s circuit, Ms. Marchak represented Canada on the U-19 side in 2002 and the U-23 side in 2004. She was selected to the 2006 World Cup side and played in an impressive three World Cups in total (2006, 2010, 2014), capturing a Silver Medal in 2014. Marchak also competed with the women’s seven’s program and went to the first sevens World Cup in 2009, as well as the 2013 seven’s World Cup in Russia. She currently coaches on Brentwood’s Girls’ Rugby Team.
Marco Antonio Bequer Hernández

Originally from Cuba, Mr. Hernandez graduated from a pedagogical university in language teaching in 1997. He has a Master of Arts in French Language obtained in France and a Master of Education in Canada. He also holds a professional specialization certificate in teaching French Immersion from the University of Victoria. Mr. Hernandez has over two decades of experience teaching languages, mainly Spanish and French. He puts into practice the communicative approach in his classes and the use of technology to boost students’ learning in languages.
Mark Wismer

Mark Wismer grew up on beautiful Manitoulin Island, the largest freshwater island in the world. It was here in this idyllic setting that he first developed his interest in teaching from his mother, also a high school teacher. Mr. Wismer graduated with a B.A. in Political Science and Human Geography from McGill University. During his time at McGill, he was introduced to the sport of rowing and joined the varsity team for the last three years of his degree.After graduation, he moved out west to hone his rowing skills on Elk Lake, Victoria, a well-known training ground for the top rowers in the country. It was during this time that Mr. Wismer first joined the Brentwood Family, working as an intern. Called back to the East, he returned to Montreal and got married to his wife: Brentwood nurse Ulrika Drevniok. Curiously enough, when the couple first met, Ms. Drevniok was being coached by Brentonian Dave Calder (‘96), a Silver Medal Olympian and current Head of Rowing at Brentwood.In 2008, Mr. Wismer completed his education degree at the University of Ottawa. He started at the School in September 2009, where he became the Houseparent of Ellis House and currently teaches Advance Placement US History and as part of the Metamorphosis 9 Program. He and his wife have also added six wonderful children—Cormac, Stella, Niall, Beatrix, Reine Marie, and Oscar—to the Brentwood Family.
Megan Rea

Miss Rea brings a lifelong love of dance and musical theatre to her teaching, shaped by experiences living across Europe and studying in the UK. Having attended boarding school herself, she understands the unique opportunities and sense of community that life in such a setting can offer. Growing up, she followed her passion for the stage to earn a B.A. (Hons) in Musical Theatre, later completing postgraduate study at the Royal Academy of Dance.Miss Rea’s teaching journey has taken her from East London to the Swiss Alps. She has embraced the unique opportunities of each role while inspiring and supporting her students of all ages and diverse backgrounds. Drawing on her professional stage experience, she brings real-world insight to her teaching, enriching students’ learning. Miss Rea loves connecting with young dancers, encouraging them to step outside of their comfort zone, build confidence, and reach their full potential.Now having embarked on a new adventure on Vancouver Island, Miss Rea is thrilled to share her passion, creativity, and enthusiasm with the vibrant Brentwood community.
Michael Keddy

Dr. Michael Keddy is an accomplished Canadian conductor, educator, and percussionist who currently serves as Head of Music at Brentwood College School in Mill Bay, British Columbia and Music Director for The Greater Victoria Concert Band (Senior level). Dr. Keddy holds a PhD in Music Education/Conducting from the University of Victoria and a Master’s Degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Manitoba, having also completed advanced studies in conducting from the University of Calgary. Throughout his career, Dr. Keddy has earned praise for the exceptional musicality of his ensembles and has taken leadership roles as conductor for the University of Victoria Wind Symphony, the University of Victoria Don Wright Symphonic Winds, and guest conductor for the Civic Orchestra of Victoria.As a percussionist, Dr. Keddy boasts a distinguished performance history, from serving as the principal timpanist and percussionist for the Civic Orchestra of Victoria to performing across Europe—most notably as a marimba soloist and percussion section leader of the Ontario Youth Concert Band, which included a solo performance at Buckingham Palace. He has also provided educational leadership as Music Director and IB Exhibitions of Learning Instructional Leader at St. Margaret’s School in Victoria and as Head of Performing Arts at Parry Sound High School (ON), and as faculty at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Keddy is widely respected for his commitment to music education, frequently adjudicating and conducting clinics throughout Canada, and remains active as a clinician and performer, with credits that include marching in the World Champion Blue Devils’ snare line and continuous involvement in community and youth music initiatives.
Michael Miller
Biology Teacher; Open-Water SCUBA Diving Coach

Michael J. R. Miller was born and raised in the non-wilds of Mississauga, Ontario. A fascination with animals led to an undergraduate degree in zoology—which eventually morphed into a passion for birds of prey. After graduation, he migrated westward to Saskatchewan, where he completed an M.Sc. investigating lead poisoning in Bald Eagles. Duties as a field biologist led him to Arizona and sites throughout western Canada and Ontario, working with both government agencies and consultants on various raptor species, ranging from conservation concerns to environmental contamination. During and after graduate school, Mr. Miller taught in biology labs at both the universities of Saskatchewan and Victoria. He completed his teaching credentials in 2006 and taught in the Cowichan Valley School District prior to taking the role at Brentwood. In the classroom, Mr. Miller is known for his puns, infectious enthusiasm, and the visits of his parrots to spice up morning lessons. Outside of school, Mr. Miller and his wife Karena enjoy travelling and routinely explore the local Vancouver Island environs with their dog—all the while managing the lives of their teenage sons and other domestic vertebrates at home. Mr. Miller brought his passion for SCUBA diving to Brentwood as a campus sport and enjoys sharing his affection for the underwater world with students and colleagues. Mr. Miller is passionate about aviation, and for campus dress-up-themed days, he can be counted on to don a selection from his growing collection of vintage flight helmets and other flight gear.
Michelle Legassicke

Growing up on Vancouver Island, Ms. Legassicke loved this hub of kayaking, fishing, and outdoor adventures. After completing a B.A. at the University of Victoria, educational and research opportunities took her east, and further afield around the world. Following the completion of an M.A. at the University of Waterloo and time working abroad in Tanzania, she returned to Canada—settling on the east coast at Dalhousie University. While in Halifax, she had the opportunity to design and teach classes in the Political Science and Sustainability departments. She also worked in student life and residences at the University of King’s College. Supported by the Dallaire Institute, EUCE, SSHRC, and Innovation grants, Ms. Legassicke’s work took her around the world: conference presentations in Hong Kong and London, research projects in Ghana and Sierra Leone, and travel to Cambodia and Indonesia. She returned to the West Coast in 2019 to be closer to family, joining Brentwood as a Boarding Faculty Assistant and working with the Debate, Model UN, Public Speaking, and Field Hockey programs. Ms. Legassicke teaches Law Studies 12, AP Psychology, and a seminar class on Philosophy, Politics and Economics. When not walking her dog Kenzie, you can find Ms. Legassicke working with students in the Model UN and Public Speaking program, or around Mackenzie House—where she works as the Assistant Houseparent.
Neil Robinson
Instructional Leader of Social Studies/Business; Metamorphosis 9 Teacher; AP Capstone; Ice Hockey Coach

Having grown up in the mountains of eastern British Columbia without much television to speak of, Mr. Robinson is drawn to the great outdoors at every opportunity. After completing high school, he attended the University of Calgary to pursue several degrees, including a master’s degree focused on gifted and talented learning. He has a passion for all things athletic and particularly enjoys golf, functional fitness, and ice hockey. Mr. Robinson’s academic interests lie in gifted education, global cultures, international politics, human rights, volunteerism, and travel. In a perfect world, he’d like to do all of them at the same time. It comes as no surprise, then, that he led Brentwood’s inaugural Learning Service Trip to Peru and, more recently, four more trips to Eswatini.
Paul Collis
Instructional Leader, English; Soccer Coach

Head of the English Department, and sartorial inspiration for multitudes of Brentwood students, Paul Collis teaches English 9, Language and Composition 11AP, and Writing 12. With an undergraduate degree from the University of British Columbia, a master’s in Shakespeare from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland, no experience as a long snapper for the Pittsburgh Steelers, a lot of experience missing disc golf putts, and a teaching diploma from the University of Victoria, Mr. Collis ensured that he remained in school in perpetuity by joining the Brentwood faculty in 1998. When not brandishing semi-colons to the reluctant or championing Dickens to the incredulous, Mr. Collis coaches soccer at Brentwood, then returns on his bicycle to Cobble Hill, where he, his wife Karen Handford, and their chickens spend many pleasant hours re-enacting great scenes from Pickwick Papers to amuse their corpulent cat.
Paul Fletcher
Photography
As a teenager, Paul Fletcher found his passion for photography. His photographs, in his current association with Los Angeles-based Getty images, have been published worldwide and his photographic artwork hangs in many homes, galleries, and businesses. In 1998, Mr. Fletcher produced Somenos: The Grandfathers Spoke to Me, a photographic and poetic celebration of the Somenos Marsh Conservation Area. When not teaching at Brentwood, Mr. Fletcher spends his time traveling the world, usually in third world countries, documenting the beauty, socio economic conditions and the environment of the places he visits.
Phil Newns
Phil is well known as a jazz pianist, vocalist, bandleader, and educator. He studied music at the University of Natal in South Africa and later through the University of Toronto. His jazz bands, choirs, and private students achieve top honours in festivals across Canada each year—including the annual Nationals, Music Fest Canada. Extensive professional career credits include Musical Director of more than 40 major theatrical productions; most recently, Mama Mia, Chicago, Spamalot, West Side Story, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, and many more.
Phil Smith
Mathematics Instructional Lead; Rugby Coach

Phil was raised in Victoria and graduated with a B.Ed. from the University of Victoria. He spent 10 years teaching in New Zealand and in 2014 he was awarded a Teacher Fellowship through the Royal Society of New Zealand to investigate Maori health and education. In 2015, he completed a Master of Mathematics for Teachers at the University of Waterloo. He returned to Canada in 2015 and has been teaching at Brentwood since. Phil is married to Maraina and they live with their five children. He loves mountain biking, ferrying his children around, and rugby!
Rachel Reynolds
Field Hockey Coach
Born and raised in Victoria, BC, Ms. Reynolds first joined Brentwood as a boarding student in Grade 8. She was a member of the Field Hockey Program for all five of her years at Brentwood and also played for the Island Field Hockey Team. After Brentwood, she went on to attend Saint Mary’s University in Halifax and play for their varsity field hockey team. During her time there, the team won the Atlantic University Championships three times and she was named captain in her senior year. Ms. Reynolds moved back to the Island in 2019 and was brought on as a member of the coaching staff of the Field Hockey Program at Brentwood. She now coaches the 1st IV team with former Brentwood teammate Alex [Hatton]. The 1st IV team won the bronze at the provincial championships in 2021, which was the first time they had won a medal at Provincials since Ms. Reynold’s and Ms. Miller’s senior year at Brentwood. She looks forward to continuing to grow the field hockey program.

A campaign of wheedling and insistence that began in 1999 and spanned two administrations ended successfully for Rebecca Day Reynolds when she was invited to join the Department of English near the close of the 2004/05 academic year. A Brentonian, herself (1980), Mrs Reynolds returned to the school she loves after teaching English in the Alberta college system for a number of years and living, studying, working, and playing on three continents during a gleeful nine-year hiatus from North American life. Mrs Reynolds’ eclectic employment history spans a bizarre spectrum: she has worked as a ghost-writer, an editor, an Irish barmaid, a course writer, a phone canvasser, a minor bureaucrat, a fundraiser, a barn-mucker, a racehorse owner, an instructor of “Gymboree” and “Babyswim,” and a reader for audiobooks. Her hobbies include working at Brentwood and gratuitously correcting the grammar of others. The proud mother of three Brentonians—and thus far, a grandmother of another two— Mrs Reynolds lives in Mill Bay with her doctorly husband.

Mr. Burgess took a degree in Visual Arts at UVic before deciding to be a teacher. He has taught in the public, private, and Indigenous school systems within BC, including living on two remote reserves. He spent ten years at Meadowridge School in Maple Ridge, mostly as an art teacher.Outside of art and teaching, Mr. Burgess has an extensive background in outdoor pursuits, especially in whitewater, and has recently acquired a sailboat he is learning to use. He is also active in medieval recreation, where he does armoured combat—though not LARPing.

Ron Neufeld

Ron Neufeld joined Brentwood in 1999 as a science teacher and Watson House houseparent, then served as Privett assistant houseparent before becoming Houseparent in 2003. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Victoria and recently accepted the position of Deputy Head of Campus Life.Mr. Neufeld (“Neuf” to many of his former students and Privett House kids) developed Brentwood’s innovative Science & Ethics course, combining scientific concepts with philosophical considerations. He has served as staff supervisor for OMNI, Brentwood’s diversity and inclusion group, and participated in the ISABC Team Leadership Development Program.Known for his analytical approach to education and collaborative leadership style, Mr. Neufeld balanced academic rigor with student well-being in both classroom and campus house settings. He is married to Lisa Handley and they have two children; one now a Brentwood alum, and another a current student.
Ryan Skardal

Originally from Manitoba, Ryan attended Brandon University. There, he studied English literature, wrote for the student newspaper, The Quill, and spoke persuasively and sometimes heckled loudly for the Brandon University Debating Society. When Brandon University offered him a chance to study as an exchange student at Tamkang University in Taiwan, Ryan jumped at the opportunity. Upon returning to Manitoba, Ryan completed his teacher training with the intent to explore new places after graduation. Before coming to Brentwood, teaching took Ryan to Kuwait, Hong Kong, and New Jersey. While in America, Ryan presented at a variety of conferences, including the NCTE Annual Conference, the AP Annual Conference, and the National Writing Project Mid-Winter Conference. In spite of his terribly lacking sense of direction, Ryan is a cheerful — if often lost — hiker, runner, and traveler. Pleased to have found a beautiful home with Brentwood College School, Ryan can most likely be found wandering amongst the trees or else through the aisles of a nearby library.
Sara Checkley
English Teacher; Debate; Advisor (Hope House)

Having taught for years with one view of Mt. Baker, Ms Checkley thought she’d try another perspective. Born in the interior of the province and raised on the island, she comes to Brentwood with years of public school experience and the stories to match. Learned in the ways of AP, many things English, a healthy smattering of Socials, and some chef-inspired Foods teaching, Ms. Checkley is looking forward to bringing all of these things together in her Brentwood classes. A Word Nerd to her core, all students in her classes can look forward to deeply nerdy etymological origin stories of words and phrases. In those off-school times you can find her browsing the Criterion Collection, trying a new restaurant, attempting to learn the cello, and poorly recreating the dance moves from some of her favourite Bollywood films. Mostly though, she’ll be with her family, book in hand, and either on, near, or in the water throughout the year.
Sara Lowes
Math Teacher

Ms. Lowes was born in Hokkaido, Japan, but grew up on beautiful Vancouver Island. Being raised on nature documentaries and ocean exploration, she has a passion for conservation and nature. Growing up with teachers in the family, the act of teaching came naturally, and she started tutoring and coaching by age 13.
Ms. Lowes is also an avid athlete and competed in/coached sports such as field hockey, ice hockey, rugby, and sailing. She joined the University of British Columbia’s varsity field hockey team and won two national championships. She completed her B.Sc. in Biology with a Minor in Asian Studies, and also achieved an Outstanding Practicum Award while finishing her B.Ed. in Secondary Science.
After starting her career in Coquitlam, Ms. Lowes moved back to the Island with her partner and their two cats. Her passion for reconciliation and climate change drives her ongoing education in Indigenous-based environmental sciences. Ms. Lowes also hopes to improve at scuba diving so that she can be a citizen scientist and track human impacts on the ocean. She loves creating lasting relationships with students and sharing her passion for life and living things.
Sarah Langer

A longtime resident of the Cowichan Valley, Sarah Langer graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (History and Women’s Studies) from the University of Victoria in 2012, followed by her Bachelor of Education from Vancouver Island University in 2013. In June of 2020, she completed her Master’s of Education in Special Education.Mrs. Langer joined Brentwood in 2014 as a Boarding Faculty Assistant and quickly fell in love with the school community. The following year, she became a full-time member of the Social Studies department. Her passion for history and connecting youth to their learning through hands-on activities and technology are just a few things she tries to bring to her classroom.Today, she is one of the teachers in the Metamorphosis 9 Program. She is excited to work with the Grade 9s to bring new and unique learning opportunities using the design thinking process. She joined the Learning Resources team part-time in September 2020 and is now the Grade 8 Learning Resource Teacher, and offers additional learning support to all students in the afternoons.In September 2019, Mrs. Langer joined Jenna Warner as the Assistant Houseparent in Alexandra House. Boarding continues to be a highlight of what she does on campus, and she cannot wait for all the future students to fall in love with the unique and beautiful Alexandra House.
Sarah Wolinsky

Originally from Ontario, Sarah spent her early adulthood chasing a variety of threads as any millennial did in the mid-2000s—academia, backcountry canoe guiding, and teaching—before finally finding a middle ground in outdoor education and independent boarding schools. The Master’s of History, on transculturation in the early internet, was what the youth might refer to as a ‘side quest’; the monochromatic wardrobe was more intentional. She now teaches Pre-Calculus, is an assistant coach of the Outdoor Pursuits Program, is Assistant Houseparent in Privett House, and dabbles in running Brentwood’s D&D Club when time allows.
Scott Doehler
Instructional Leader, Science; Robotics and Metamorphosis 9 Teacher

Born and raised in Scarborough, Ontario, the son of two teachers, Mr. Doehler has—along with many fellow Canadians—opposed Earth’s rotation and slowly drifted west. After backpacking around the world for a year following university, Mr. Doehler enjoyed ten great years teaching junior high school in Edmonton and Calgary before shifting to ‘Island time’ and joining the Brentwood faculty. He has an absolute passion for the rocks, raw power, and beauty of our planet, and champions courses in Earth science and geology. When not in one of the science labs, Mr. Doehler can be found in the Robotics Lab helping students explore mechanics, coding, and engineering.Outside of the wonderful whirlwind that is Brentwood, Mr. Doehler joins his wife Marianne—a fellow geologist—in passions for vocal music, snowboarding, and backcountry hiking. Summiting Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa and taking their eight-month-old son on his first multi-week camping trip throughout Alaska and the Yukon exemplify the travel ‘bug’ that has so thoroughly bitten them both. Mr. and Mrs. Doehler now live off-campus with three wonderful children, one dog, two cats, and four rats—though they can count numerous adopted sons still on campus from their five years as Assistant Houseparents in Privett House.
Scott McGill
Rock Band Teacher

Born and raised on the west coast, Scott McGill majored in pop voice and jazz at Capilano College in Vancouver. He gained industry attention with the release of two notable independent albums nominated for music awards: in 1997, the album, First Time won runner-up at the YTV Youth Achievement Awards. In 2000, Check the Hype was nominated for Best New Indie Album at the influential West Coast Music Awards. In 2001, Mr. McGill was selected for a part in the Global Television reality show, Pop Stars: Boy Meets Girl, filmed in Toronto. Mr. McGill has fronted three bands in Vancouver: Revelry, Juice, and Hummer. He also composes and records his own solo projects. He regularly opened for bands such as Nickleback, Widemouth Mason, and Tower of Power and describes his work as “acoustic-pop-folk-soul-jazz”. Mr. McGill’s teaching philosophy encourages students to find their own voice through music. At Brentwood, he teaches Rock Band and has helped students to earn national-level awards.
Sean Hacker Teper
Science, Marine Science, and Biology teacher, Ice Hockey Coach

Mr. Hacker Teper was born and raised in Toronto, Ontario. From a young age, he gravitated towards water and conservation. As a keen young scientist, he could often be found “rescuing” frogs with his younger brother, transporting them from streams to the local lake for the purpose of providing them a “better” life. On family vacations, he always pushed to see the local aquariums. This interest led him to Vancouver Island in the summer after Grade 11, where he completed a marine biology course and earned his scuba diving certification. Back in Toronto, Mr. Hacker Teper’s involvement as a coxswain on his high school rowing team earned him a position on the Boston University men’s rowing team. He graduated with a degree in Marine Biology and memorable fieldwork along the Massachusetts coast, Belize, and Ecuador. He returned home to Toronto for a year to pursue a budding photography passion before heading east to Newfoundland to earn his master’s in marine biology. In St. John’s, he learned biochemistry on the fly as he investigated a food web for little critters living in rhodolith beds. As he completed his master’s degree, he realized he loved teaching and headed westward to BC, where he earned his teaching credentials and has taught since 2020. Outside of school, you can find him baking fresh sourdough, fermenting strange foods, playing pickleball, doing astrophotography, or somewhere underwater exploring British Columbia’s reefs.
Seth Moyer
Boarding Faculty Assistant – Whittall House

Seth Moyer was born and raised on his family’s pick-your-own farm in the heart of Niagara. Growing up, he spent much of his time playing ice hockey, skateboarding, working on the farm, and keeping his two younger brothers out of trouble. Starting in the 7th grade, Seth attended Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ontario. During his 6-year tenure at Ridley, he learned how to play the double bass, spent a semester at Bishop’s Diocesan College in Cape Town, South Africa, and began to row.Mr. Moyer’s rowing career eventually brought him to the lightweight crew at Yale University. In his three seasons on the team (the 2019-2020 season was canceled due to COVID), he earned medals at the EARC Sprints in the 4th, 3rd, and 2nd Varsity shells and contributed to two Jope Cup victories. Since graduating in 2023, he has worked as a Program Leader at the Pennsylvania Athletic Club’s Junior GOLD program in Philadelphia, as a member of Realm Cellars’ wine production team in Napa Valley, and as an operations manager back home on the farm. He now finds himself in Mill Bay and is the BFA for Whittall House and coach of the junior men’s rowing team. He’s eager to immerse himself in the world of Brentwood and contribute to the school’s history of excellence.
Shane Thompson
Assistant Houseparent (Rogers House); Head of Rugby; Grade 8 P.E.

Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, Shane Thompson grew up in a very athletic family, developing an early and incurable passion for sports. Focusing on university-level basketball, football, and rugby, he attended Bishop’s University and completed a B.A. in geography and economics—in between practices. Shortly afterward, he moved to Victoria, BC, played rugby for the Canadian National Team, and toured the world several times over. In 2005, Mr. Thompson transitioned into coaching for Rugby Canada and completed his Master of Education at the University of Victoria. When not coaching rugby or strength and conditioning at Brentwood, he works as a professional coach and manager for the BC Rugby Elite Youth 7s Program and also coaches the Canada Maple Leafs 7s Team. Mr. Thompson’s goal is to strengthen Brentwood’s Rugby Program and to cultivate elite players who may one day realize their Olympic dream. He is an outdoor aficionado, a keen traveller, and a surprisingly talented hip-hop and swing dancer.
Sharon Hall

A true BC-er, Sharon Hall grew up in the Lower Mainland and attended Simon Fraser University for her undergraduate degree with majors in history, political science, and French—and postgraduate work in history, followed by PDP. Her teaching experience has varied from French 8-12, Socials Studies 5-11, and French Immersion. She has written educational materials for Fluency Matters and co-authored a novel for French learners. Ms. Hall teaches Comparative Government and Politics as well as working in the University Counselling Office where she enjoys guiding students with their post high school journey. She is a proud mom to Caitlin (Mack ‘16) and Connor (Ellis ‘18) and mostly proud wife to Harold Wardrop. She loves travelling, swimming in Shawnigan Lake all summer, and nerdy board games.

With a distinguished career spanning nearly four decades as a professional theatre artist, Stephanie Roth has graced stages across North America. Her extensive credits include the US Broadway Tour of RENT, the original Canadian company of The Who’s Tommy, and four seasons at the Stratford Festival. Locally, she has captivated audiences in starring roles at the Arts Club Theatre Company and the Chemainus Theatre Festival. An active performer, director, and educator, Ms. Roth also serves on the faculty at the Canadian College of Performing Arts. After relocating to the Island in 2021, she established the Stephanie Roth Performing Arts Studio, where she mentors students ages 4 to 82. Ms. Roth believes that the performing arts offer a unique space for personal growth and connection. She is dedicated to fostering an environment where students find the courage to take creative risks and unlock their full potential. Stephanie looks forward to inspiring the next generation of Brentonian creatives!
Stephen Ross

Originally from Ontario, Mr. Ross has been involved in rowing for over 28 years. Before Brentwood he worked at Row Ontario as the Manager of Competition and Events for two years, and for 15 years in Customer Service and Operations for HUDSON Boat Works. On the coaching side, he was the volunteer Head Coach of the London Rowing Club for 9 years.
Steve Cowie
History, Social Studies teacher; Rugby Coach

A native of sunny Kelowna, British Columbia, Steve Cowie graduated with honours from the University of Victoria in 1975, majoring in history and English, then completed his master’s in history in 1976. He has played rugby for the UVic Vikings, the Castaways, the Island Crimson Tide, and Cowichan. As the longest-serving member of the Brentwood faculty, Mr. Cowie is a “lifer” nine times over—and now teaches the sons and daughters of students he taught in the early years. For his first five years at Brentwood, he was the Assistant Houseparent of Ellis House and has been associated with Ellis ever since.He has taught history, geography, English, creative writing, and law—while coaching at every level of rugby, basketball, golf, and tennis. He was Head of the Social Studies Department for ten years and was also Editor for 15 Brentwood yearbooks. He has had the privilege of coaching the Girls’ Rugby Team since 2003 as well as the Island Tsunami U18 Girls’ Team and the BC U18 Girls’ Team, with Mr. Marius Felix.Though Dr. Johnson defined a historian as “a hopeless drudge”, Mr. Cowie makes history come alive in the classroom with his passion for teaching and his belief that inspiration and encouragement are the greatest motivators. He likes to think this keeps him eternally young at heart. Mr. Cowie and his wife Sheila have two sons who are Old Brentonians—David (‘08; married to Mandy Marchak) and Nathan (‘05; married to Robyn), and three grandchildren, Finn, Lilly and Elias.
Sue Cheung Robinson

After growing up in the heart of Calgary, Sue Cheung was drawn by a love of the ocean and marine biology to the program at UBC where she obtained her B.Sc. She completed her teaching degree at the University of Calgary and then taught at a school focused on gifted and talented learners. While there, she pioneered annual trips back to the west coast where students were immersed in ocean navigation, marine biology, and ecology. It was not long before the pull was so strong that she moved to Brentwood and its oceanside campus permanently—where she teaches AP Biology and is the Houseparent for Mackenzie House. While not near the ocean she enjoys all things soccer-related, is a committed Calgary Flames fan, and has a love for international travel with her family.

Growing up in Victoria, Summer McLellan has always been passionate about the outdoors and the environment. Summer McLellan completed her bachelor’s degree in geography and environmental studies at the University of Victoria. Some of her academic interests are conservation, specifically in the marine environment, ecology, and climatology. Summer spent time travelling and working as a coral reef conservation diver where she could pursue her love for SCUBA diving and became a SCUBA instructor. She has worked with Brentwood for two years through the SCUBA program and looks forward to joining the team with a more involved role.
Tammie Rena Ramsay
Assistant Houseparent (Whittall House); Grad Sponsor; SAC Sponsor; Weight Training Coach; Interhouse Coordinator
Ms. Ramsay was born and raised in Eastern Canada, where she completed her practical nursing and went on to spend the next 25 years working in diverse areas of human services. Her jobs included psychiatric-geriatric, spinal cord rehabilitation, brain injury rehab, and working with marginalized individuals struggling with homelessness and addiction who were living on the streets of Victoria. She feels that being the team leader at the Emergency Homeless Shelter in the downtown core gave her enormous insight into humanity, and taught her to be curious rather than judgmental. She holds several certifications in mental health, martial arts, and conflict resolution. Ms. Ramsay was also chosen for the Award of Accommodation for outstanding leadership in her community from the Victoria Police Department. Kindness, compassion, humor, and joy follow Miss Ramsay wherever she lands. She joined the Brentwood community in 2018 as a BFA, Woodworking Instructor, Weight Training Coach, and Advisor to the Mackenzie House girls. She quickly immersed herself in the Brentwood Family and moved on to become the Assistant Houseparent in Whittall House, and is currently head of the Student Activity Council, Interhouse Coordinator and Grad Sponsor. Ms. Ramsay and her teenage son Keiran (who also attends and lives at Brentwood) enjoy travelling and experiencing new cultures, food, and lifestyles.
Tanya Scheck
Athletics Coordinator; Head of Strength & Conditioning; Volleyball, Sports Rehabilitation coach

Ms. Scheck was raised in Northern BC where she developed a keen interest in playing a variety of summer and winter sports. Her main interests were volleyball, softball, basketball, and curling. It did not take long for Ms. Scheck to realize that volleyball was going to be a sport she continued playing throughout her life. After high school, she went on to play for the College of New Caledonia—leading the team to a qualifying spot at the Provincial Championships. Ms. Scheck was named to the Inter-Collegiate All-Canadian Team. The University of Victoria was the next stop for Ms. Scheck where she continued her studies and her volleyball career. She knew her interest in sports would be a stepping stone for her future interest in how the human body moves. Ms. Scheck graduated with a degree in kinesiology from UVic while playing on the Women’s Varsity Volleyball Team. Ms. Scheck was a middle blocker at UVic—training under her mentor, Ms. Jill Fougner. After graduation, Ms. Scheck went on to continue her mentorship as an assistant coach to Ms. Fougner. Tanya Scheck holds her Level II National Coaching certification in volleyball and joined the Brentwood community in 2003. Ms. Scheck currently coaches volleyball, girls’ weight training, the senior-level strength and conditioning program, as well as the rehabilitation program. Ms. Scheck and her family reside in the Mill Bay area.
Taryn Knorren
Social Studies Teacher; Climbing Coach

Taryn Knorren grew up in Calgary, AB, splitting her time between exploring the mountains, competitive Irish dancing, travelling, and learning. Not being one for overly formal or stereotypical classrooms she was drawn to the East Coast of Canada to a unique university experience that allowed her to travel the world and dive deep into teamwork and collaboration. Her work, dance, and education have allowed her to travel and live abroad in many countries including India, Australia, and Japan. Throughout all of these experiences, Taryn’s passion for social justice and politics made her want to make her home country of Canada a better place. In 2015, she ran in the Federal election as a candidate in Calgary Signal Hill but the grassroots of education kept calling her to the classroom.After completing her B.Ed. in Calgary, Taryn taught at an independent school for several years while completing her Master’s in Education with a focus on collaboration. Ready for new challenges, Taryn, her husband, and their border collie Charlie’s love of nature and the ocean called them to the west coast and Brentwood College School.
Tiara Hobbs

Born in Singapore, and later moving to Canada with her family, Tiara has called Victoria, BC, her home since 2001. Athletics has always played a very important part in her life as she participated in numerous sports teams competitively throughout high school. As Ms. Hobbs grew older, she began focusing more of her attention on a select few and found her passion lay mainly in three sports: tennis, volleyball, and golf. After completing the Golf Management Program at Camosun College, she moved back to Singapore to coach golf and tennis but return to Victoria in 2013 to further her tennis career. She was successful at obtaining both her Instructor and Club Pro 1 certification and plans to continue upgrading to Club Pro 2 in the future.
Toby Collis Handford

Born and raised on Vancouver Island, Toby Collis Handford is thrilled to be working at Brentwood as an AP Language and Composition teacher, a soccer coach, a football coach, and now the Assistant House Parent of Ellis. While completing a Bachelor of Arts degree at UBC, Toby was able to receive the Chancellor’s Scholarship in academics, accept the Kelly’s Curtis Memorial Scholarship in English, and defeat Harold Wardrop in a fantasy football league. Toby is grateful to have held teaching positions at UBC-O, West Vancouver Secondary School, and Academic Camps Canada. He aims to use his experience to give the young men of Ellis House the best start to their academic careers possible.
Tom Shadlock

With over 25 years of coaching experience, Mr. Shadlock is a NCCP Level 1 Coach and has coached everything from initiation-level hockey to Junior B. Over the years, he has been lucky to work with some amazingly talented athletes and has become lifelong friends with coaches and parents associated with the sport. Some of the athletes he has worked with have moved on to play at Division 1 University, AHL, WHL, and Junior B. Working with these amazing kids is a pleasure and a privilege—their youthful exuberance keeps him feeling young with every minute he spends with them.
Trevor Davies
Private Music Instructor – Guitar and Bass Guitar

Trevor Davies is a versatile guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, and independent singer-songwriter. Splitting his professional career between Montreal and Vancouver Island, he has been a vital part of the music scene in both places, producing two full-length albums and playing hundreds of shows both as a backing musician and bandleader. Since studying jazz with Pat Coleman, Trevor has worked with the Victoria Symphony, The Nylons, Ian Finkel, contemporary hip-hop group Urban Science, and Haitian Canadian pop artist Rutshelle. As a teacher, Trevor is kind, patient, and passionate about self-expression. He has experience teaching thousands of private lessons in English and French, as well as classrooms and workshops, most recently on Penelakut Island.
Tyler Ethier
Tyler Ethier is an ACMG‑certified climbing gym instructor who has been climbing competitively and recreationally since 2016. He has over seven years of experience coaching and instructing a wide range of ages and skill levels, and he loves seeing people improve. His passion for climbing is contagious and leaves campers enthusiastic about the sport.
Vittorio (Vito) Pasquale
Social Studies Teacher; Basketball Coach

Born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, Mr. Pasquale left his Italian immigrant upbringing to attend the University of Victoria, where he graduated with a B.A. degree and played varsity basketball for five years, experiencing 3 national championships while attending.Mr. Pasquale spent a few years coaching at the college and university levels before returning to school at UBC and graduating with his B.Ed., then teaching at the high school level for the last 35 years. He has spent time at various schools in BC: Vancouver College, West Point Grey Academy, and Shawnigan Lake School. He has been a committed social studies teacher in grades 9 to 12. This will be his 7th year at Brentwood.
Wesley Barrett
Houseparent (Whittal House); Head of Soccer

Born and raised in Richmond, BC, Mr. Barrett is going into his ninth year at Brentwood and eighth year as Head of Soccer.The Brentwood Soccer Program sees over 100 different athletes on the pitch at any given time throughout the year. Competitive soccer runs in the fall term for boys and the spring term for girls, with soccer training happening in the winter term. The highlight over the last ten years, if you asked anyone in the soccer program, would be the boys winning the BC Championships in 2021. Mr. Barrett moved to Vancouver Island at 19 to attend the University of Victoria to pursue his post-secondary education and to play Vikes Varsity Soccer. He played soccer for the Vikes from 2008-12. The highlight of his university career was winning the National Championship on home soil in 2011.Mr. Barrett finished a degree in Recreation and Health in May of 2013 and he holds a National B coaching Licence out of British Columbia. Mr. Barrett has spent the last 20 years coaching soccer, mostly in Victoria and the Lower Mainland. He also co-founded an organization called EPIC Sport Management Society and continues to oversee and facilitate EPIC while working as Brentwood’s Head of Soccer. EPIC runs the largest College ID Camp in Western Canada. Mr. Barrett has a very close connection to a multitude of Canadian university soccer programs.
