Against the Odds

This year the First 11 Field Hockey team consisted mostly of returning players, but we had a few new faces thrown in the mix. Having most of the team already familiar with one another was helpful because we already had formed a bond with one another. The season started pretty quickly for us, with a tournament the first week of school and things did not slow down until the end of October. The Friendship Cup, our first tournament of the year, was really about practicing our skills and getting back into the field hockey mindset. Though the results were not outstanding, we knew what needed to be refined. The difference between our first tournament in early September and the Island Championships in November was remarkable. We played like a team and fought to prove ourselves as worthy competitors. We were expected to place fifth out of six teams in the tournament, but we ended up beating GNS to clinch a spot in the semi-finals. After losing to SMUS, we ended up playing Mark Isfeld for a chance at third place. In a hard-fought game, we lost by one point and finished a strong fourth place. This team played hard every game and fought tooth and nail out on the field; however, we still managed to have fun and let loose every once in a while. We had comments from other coaches and referees complimenting us on our hard work and determination. We were the embodiment of grit and joy. On behalf of all the girls, I would like to thank the team for making this an amazing final year of field hockey.
