2nd X1 Field Hockey

The field hockey program is building momentum: it even topped last year with over 40 players bringing fun, a willingness to learn new skills, and a competitive spirit. The 2nd X1 mostly consisted of new players. They were motivated by Co-Captains Ella O & Katia M.

It is always a challenge to play competitive games against schools in the Cowichan Valley, as most local players learn the game from an early age. It brings the coaches great joy when they see the development of skills and tactical knowledge, proven by many successful games and narrow losses.

Convincing girls to be goalkeepers – the most important person on the team – is always a challenge. This year, we had Kayla K return and get stronger and technically more proficient as well as Joanna L bring joy and fearlessness to the role. They were coached by an ex-goalkeeper, Ms Legassicke. Thank goodness for a specialist coach because goalkeepers need to be trained one-on-one to learn all the nuances of the role. With an inexperienced team of 10 players in front of them, they were never too idle and made exceptional saves in every game, keeping the team competitive.

The final tournament in Victoria left the team and their coaches with a great sense of pride, as they played well, showing all their newfound skills and an increased understanding of team play in every game. We hope that the players return next season and encourage other newbies to try field hockey.
