A Day Aboard HMCS Rogers

“Rogers House is the sweetest house” agreed many students.

Rogers House is the first building people have is a sight when they enter the Brentwood Gates. It is also the biggest house, hosting 71 boarding and day students.

The Rogers crew arises at the sound of the bell at 7:00 am and depart to eat a delicious breakfast at Crooks Hall. Once they return, they begin to tidy their dorms to get ready for the morning inspection; some of them have morning chores such as vacuuming the hall or emptying the garbage. By 7:50 am, the prefects on duty inspect each dorm and house chores to make sure they are done properly. Once the bell hits 8:10 am, Rogers sailors march to the hallway and greet our Captain, Mr Snow and his Assistant, Mr Thompson on their way to the morning class.

When the boys return from their sports and arts, Rogers House becomes lively again. In the common room, students enjoy playing pool with their peers. Others gather around on the TV and enjoy their free time.

Some students go to the Galley, which is a unique facility only in Rogers House. The Galley is where people can buy a can of soda or small snacks for a relatively cheap price. It is run by a Galley Prefect Andrew G, and Galley assistants Rei K, Rogers, Kalem S, Rogers, Santino G, and Cannon B. The money raised is used for charity and House Outings.

At 7:15 pm, all Rogers crews gather around in the hallway to sign-in with the prefect on duty. Even though everyone in Rogers House has different schedules, we all come back to our home for sign-in. Prep begins at 7:30 pm, arguably the most important time of the day, where all students spend two hours reviewing their academic class and doing their homework. Prefects on duty roam around the house to make sure everybody is doing proper work. One of our prefects, Andrew G, says “I love to offer help to juniors and be a big buddy for them.”

When prep finishes at 9:30, boarders get ready for their respective bedtimes. October 9th was a special day for someone. It was the birthday of one of our youngest members of the House, Bert F, Rogers ‘24 so we celebrated his special day with our traditional Rogers way; students huddled on Bert F and sang “Happy Birthday” at the top of our lungs. Today’s lucky boy, Bert F states, “It was great having so much support from the House.”

Once the celebration is done, it is time for bedtime. Crew members say their final goodnight to their peers and rest for tomorrow.
