A Harrowing Battle

Last Saturday, the Junior Girls Soccer team disembarked Brentwood in the direction of Shawnigan Lake School with high hopes for our first tournament of the season. Our coach, the admirable Mr. Collis, began his usual pre-game talk while handing out jerseys. The excitement and apprehension were tangible. We all knew that the three games we would play today would be arduous.

Heads held high, the team proudly rolled up to SLS. The usual warm-up (a lap around the field, stretching and the “good ol’ four vs. two”) ensued. The first school we were to face would be Francis Kelsey. Next would be Gulf Islands, and to wrap up the day, the classic Brentwood-Shawnigan face-off.

Having played Kelsey the Tuesday prior, we knew that a win would be no easy feat. Kicking off at noon, the team played with a lot of spunk. 60 minutes of quality soccer saw some spectacular plays with some tough-as-nails defensive strength. The end saw an even 0-0 scoreline.

A hard-fought battle now under our belts, we moved on to play Gulf Islands. Scoring early, we were up 1-0 for the first half. However, due to an unfortunate penalty goal by the opposition early in the second half, the final score was 1-1.

After a short break, the familiar black and yellow jerseys clashed with our sleek black and red ones. Wearied but not disheartened by the day’s events, we fought and played hard. Lamentably, due to two flukey goals by SLS, we lost the game 2-0, placing us third in the tournament. This however, did not discourage the team. The junior girls improved and worked better together than ever before. We look forward to the rest of the season, and the tantalizing possibility of The Mid-Islands Championships.
