A Night at the Java

As winter term (and hopefully the rain) comes to an end, as the musical, A Chorus Line, is in its performance week, and as finals season looms on the horizon, the school needs a little pep. 

And what better elixir than to showcase some of Brentwood’s amazing talent with Java Hut? 

Java Hut, for any of you unaware, is a night where the caf gets transformed into a small stage, where students can perform acts of any nature. From musical numbers to standup acts, it is always a blast. It’s one of my favourite performances at Brentwood. The community support and lack of pressure allow students to showcase their talents in an intimate setting. 

The lineup was stacked this year, and with the announcement that Connor W and Florence T would be MCing, the hype was building. 

The best thing about Java Hut? You never know what to expect. 

And we were not disappointed.

To start the evening, it was Mr McGill and his girlfriend singing an original song: it was incredible. Sitting backstage with Yvonne B, she told me “Thank God we don’t have to follow that. It was too good” and I agreed. Act after act, they kept getting better. Always a highlight, Mrs Wolinsky with her standup comedy somehow got even funnier than last year. 

As one of the performers this year, it was a lot of fun. This could be the Grade 12 talking, but when one of my performing partners, Clare R, said, “We should’ve been doing this since Grade 9”, I couldn’t agree more. But as someone who suffers from quite a bit of stage fright, I wanted to congratulate all the performers for doing such a great job. It’s always nerve-wracking to stand up in a room full of your peers and perform, but you all did it and made it one of the best Java Huts I’ve seen.  

A big shoutout to Mrs Ramsay and the SAC for putting this night together, and a massive thank you to Theatre Pro and Mrs Plough for (always) working behind the scenes to make these events run so smoothly. And to the performers, again, you all killed it.
