A Slamming Good Time

A couple of weeks ago, Brentwood students embarked on a literary journey of discovery as we were treated to three visiting Slam poets. Forgoing Saturday sleep-in in favour of the lyrical tones of three well-seasoned slammers, we were introduced to the new realm of poetic exploration that is Slam Poetry. The rules of Slam are:
1. Each poet must write her or his own poem.
2. The use of props and costumes is not necessary. The poets must captivate the audience with the power of their words.
3. Have fun and judge by the quality of the poem, no matter how many other redeeming features the poet might have.

The judges were chosen from among Brentwood’s own and then handed the all-important white board and marker. They sat ready and waiting to judge the poets who astounded us with their work. The contribution of the audience to the judging process was also key, signaled by the happy cheers, or the disappointed ‘boos.’
Each poet bravely stepped up to the microphone, delivered his or her poems, and then was judged, both by the audience and the selected students judges. By the end of three harrowing rounds, a winner had been chosen.

Along the way, Brentwood was suitably entertained with new opinions about subjects including love, beauty, and family, taught a new method of applause specifically designed for Slam poetry contests (the clicking of fingers) and that rap music is poetry. We were also captivated by the outstanding work displayed by the visiting poets.
