A Slice of Culture

Last Thursday, a multitude of art students – mainly sculpture students, along with four 2D artists – went on a field-trip to three gallery openings in downtown Victoria. Ranging from 9th to 12th grade, the students, myself included, boarded a bus at 5:45 and began the short ride from Mill Bay to downtown Victoria. Accompanied and surveyed by the ever-dutiful eyes of Mr. Luna and Mr. Robson, the ride went smoothly.

We began the night in Victoria at the Deluge where we met Mr. Boehme. The Deluge is a contemporary art gallery that was showing an exhibit entitled Models for the Public Sphere – the artist was Greg Snider, a sculptor and installation artist living and working in Vancouver.

After half an hour, we left the Deluge and went to the G++ Gallery and received a pre-opening viewing of an interactive show called Atagamaton; after interacting with the work, we boarded the bus again for a final stop at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria where the show was entitled Throwdown. It was a collection of work by 5 BC artists and was very diverse: sculpture, painting, and photography. The work not only reflected the current art world, but also, on a more local scale, the socio-political situation of British Columbia.

Thanks to our three instructors for sharing, with us, this professional, local and contemporary art.
