A Well-Picked Week

Last week, students in Environmental Advocacy & The BEAT (Brentwood Environmental Action team) really got their hands dirty.

Monday and Wednesday we were able to pick pears, plums and several types of apples from some of the 17 fruit trees on campus.

On Friday about 20 of us took a trip to Wilder Market Garden, a family-owned farm in Cobble Hill, nurtured by alumna Robin McDaniel and her husband, Caleb, where we helped harvest fresh produce – potatoes, tomatoes, apples, squash, beans & strawberries – and prep the farm for winter.

We learned valuable skills about how to pick produce and take care of chickens – and their two young energetic boys. It was also a great way to catch the last few days of sun.

The BEAT/EA team then celebrated at Mr Ganley’s house where we enjoyed plant-based burgers, home-made jams paired with pears, apple crisp (from the fruit picked on campus) and a dip in Doctor G’s pool.

The day ended with dirt-stained shoes, callused hands and a sense of an environmental job well done. It was an amazing experience the team hopes to have again soon.
