Adventure Awaits: Exploring Ex10Days at Brentwood

For the Grade 10s, the spring calendar holds a special highlight: Extendays. These two or three days are a dedicated break from the traditional learning environment, designed exclusively for Grade 10s to step outside their comfort zones, bond with peers, and explore the beauty of Vancouver Island.

The beauty of Extendays lies in its immense diversity. Whether you’re a thrill seeker who wants to surf in Tofinio, or someone who prefers the quiet satisfaction of community service by removing invasive English Ivy from local trees, there is truly something for everyone. From the spray of the Pacific, to the earthy rows of a local farm, there are dozens of options. Even the Head of School, Mr Chalmers, led a canoe trip on Cowichan lake with alumna Aiyanna Michaud.

For many, the crown jewel of the Extendays experience is the overnight trip to Tofino, which only a small group of 8 get into. Students head to the western extremity of the Island to test their balance on surfboards and enjoy the camaraderie of a coastal campfire. Quentin P, Privett ‘28 who braved the swells noted, “Waking up to the sound of the waves and then hitting the water with my friends was awesome.”

Not all adventures require a wetsuit. Many students opt for a more grounded experience, lending a hand at a local seed farm. This overnight trip offered a unique perspective on sustainability and hard work, proving that getting your hands dirty can be incredibly rewarding. As Agustin P, Whittall ‘28 reflected, “Working on the farm was surprisingly peaceful. It was great to actually see how much work is put in, and give back to the community.”

For those looking to conquer their fear of heights or have a good time rock climbing, the trip to WildPlay provided the ultimate adrenaline rush. Between ziplining through the canopy and navigating high ropes courses, it’s a masterclass in personal grit. “Climbing the high ropes at WildPlay really pushed me, ” Braeden S, Ellis ‘28 admitted. “I’m usually not too comfortable with heights, but having my friends cheer me on made it a lot easier.”

Beyond these highlights, the options are nearly endless. Students could be found kayaking through Mill Bay’s waters, engaging in a competitive round of disc golf, or restoring local ecosystems by removing invasive species on scenic hikes. Whether it is a quick half-day excursion or an overnight journey, Extendays offer a chance to turn classmates into lifelong friends.
