After welcoming our new sisters into Alex House with open arms during Orientation Week, the year simply took off. Just weeks into the school year, Grade 12s ran screaming down the halls at 7 AM playing “Dr. Pepper.” Everyone was ordered to change into swimsuits for our annual polar bear swim, which concluded with a delicious crepe in-house breakfast prepared by the Grade 12s. This was only one of the many memorable moments for this family that we have all come to know so well. Others include skits at the Christmas dinner, bowling with Whittall House, and skating on Valentine’s Day. The duty staff members know that Alex girls can be a handful when it comes to settling in for prep, yet they never cease to encourage and guide us through our challenging Brentwood careers. On behalf of the girls, thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Warner (and Finley and Sullivan), Ms. Richardson, Ms. Beausoleil, Ms. Ramundi, and Ms. Steele-Macinnis. This brings us to the woman who deserves the biggest thanks of all, the one who never fails to remind us to “Unroll your kilt!” and that “This too shall pass,” or that we are “Not quick chicks!” That’s right, Mrs. Mais: the woman who has mothered each and every one of us when our real moms could not be present. In honour of our second mother, the Grade 12s brought Jamaica to Maisi during our open house. Beef patties, the beach setting, and a printout photo booth with a Jamaican sunset background were just a few of the features used to mimic Mrs. Mais’ country of origin. It was irie, mon! Finally, I speak for all the Grade 12s when addressing our girls. Grade 9s: stay sweet. Grade 10s: stay level-headed. Grade 11s: stay close and make the most of your last year in 2016-2017. And to the duty staff: crack the whip! It has been an amazing final year with all of you, and there will always be a special place in our hearts for our beloved Alex House girls.
