An Afternoon Fit For Pruning!

For some, it was just a regular Monday, but for the Environmental Advocates of the school, last Monday was an adventure up the block to prune! After several years of neglect, the fruit trees that decorate Mr Rodrigues’ backyard on Partridge Road require some maintenance heading into the summer season. An avid member of the team, Estelle DGB says, “It’ll be really rewarding to see all our efforts come to fruition in the fall!”

With the guidance of Brentwood’s horticulturist, Mr John Brennan, our group spent an hour cutting back the overgrown branches on the apple, cherry and plum trees that waste energy that could go to the production of fruit.

Mr Brennan confirmed the quality of the students’ work, stating, “The students were enthusiastic, hard-working, and they learned quickly”. BEAT Co-Sponsor Mr Ganley added “I was really pleased that we had the hands-on opportunity to learn from an expert how to properly prune fruit trees.”

Even BEAT Co-Sponsor Ms Miller, photo above, took the opportunity to ascend into the foliage to operate the pole chain saw and bring order to the unruly suckers.
