As students and faculty are thrilled by the return to live performances, shows, and festivals, we celebrate some of the outstanding achievements of our music performers and anticipate some exciting arts events to come. This is the season of music festivals and we are so proud of our student performers. The Brentwood Songbirds Vocal Jazz Ensemble received the Excellent Performance by a Senior Jazz Choir, Show Choir, or Ensemble award of $200—donated by the Linden Singers of Victoria at the Victoria Festival of Performing Arts. The Songbirds will receive their award at the Choral Highlights Concert at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, May 10, at the Philip T. Young Auditorium at the University of Victoria. Brentwood Pitches Vocal Ensemble also received an invitation to sing at the Highlights Concert. Both ensembles will be there. At the Vancouver Island Concert Band Festival in Port Alberni, The Brentwood String Ensemble received a Superior rating and an invitation to Musicfest Canada 2023, and the Wind Ensemble received an Excellent rating. Late last week, at the West Coast Jazz Festival at VIU campus in Nanaimo we had several medal placements from among our student performers—well done, all! Jazz Band – Excellent Silver Advanced Rock Band – Superior Gold Intermediate Rock Band – Excellent Silver Songbirds Vocal Jazz Ensemble – Excellent Silver Beginner Rock Band – Excellent Silver Upcoming at the Killy Theatre this week is the Dance Program’s STRIKE! featuring solos and ensemble choreography by both faculty and students. Parents and the public are invited to attend this annual showcase on Thursday, May 5, and Friday, May 6—either by booking general seats online at theatre.brentwood.bc.ca or at the box office on the evening of the performance. Tickets are 10$ and the doors to the theatre open at 7 pm. The show starts at 7:30 pm. Please bring bottled water or juice for intermission as our concession is not open. On Friday, June 3, you will be able to experience all of the award-winning musical ensembles, and soloists—both instrumental and vocal—in our charity concert for Monday Morning Music Society (a music therapy program for special needs people in the Cowichan Valley), with all proceeds going to this charity. Tickets can be booked online as usual or at the door. Showtime at 7:30 pm. Finally, congratulations to the student artists of Unison. The show was a collaboration of works from all of our visual arts programs—on display this past 50th Regatta weekend in the Centre for Arts and Humanities for our international and Canadian guests and student families. We enjoyed 3D Sculpture, Drawing and Painting, Art Foundation, Woodwork, Graphic Art, Pottery, Video/Film, and Photography—both Traditional and Digital. There was much to inspire us.
