ATHLETICS: 2025/26
It has been an action-packed year for Brentwood Athletics. In addition to strong competitive team results, we were also able to offer an outstanding breadth of recreational programs that continued to provide our students with wonderful experiences. Our climbers engaged in inter-school competitions for the third consecutive year and also took to the outdoors with a trip to Squamish. Jiu-Jitsu students took their skills into local competitions, and programs like SCUBA, Squash, Fitness Performance, Dance, and Yoga continued to thrive. Our Outdoor Pursuits members were again fortunate to be part of a program that takes students to pristine places of which the rest of us can only dream. And our Cross-Country runners ran all over Vancouver Island—with some of our top runners competing in Island and Provincial meets.
On the competitive side, we once again hosted a vast array of invitational tournaments, in addition to hosting three Island Championships—including our first-ever Island golf championship. For many of our teams, it was a year of adjustment as they got used to competing in higher tiers. Tennis saw the sport move to just one tier, so we found ourselves battling all the big schools in the province. Volleyball made the move up to 3A due to our increased girls population, and both boys rugby and boys basketball were moved up by BC School Sports due to the success they had achieved at the 2A Provincials over the last 6 years. It was definitely a more competitive landscape for all these teams, but they performed well and, in some cases, were still able to garner success at both the Island and Provincial championships. I will list some highlights below, but I would suggest that one of the biggest surprises of the year was our Senior Girls Soccer team. The team had only three Grade 12 players, and expectations were low, but this young group just kept finding ways to win games—winning Bronze at the North Island Championship and finishing 4th overall at Islands.
One of the big reasons behind our successful teams and programs is the talented, caring, and committed coaching staff. Sadly for us, Ms. Tiara Hobbs, our Head of Tennis, will be moving to Calgary in the summer. Tiara has been leading our program for the past five years and has done an outstanding job. The good news is Mr. Conrad Alscher, who has been working alongside Ms. Hobbs for the last few years, will be taking over the reins, and we are excited for him to build upon Tiara’s legacy.
