Athletics Update 1

Despite the pandemic, January has been a busy time for our competitive sports teams.
After a lengthy lay-off over the winter break, the students in the hockey program would have been forgiven for showing a little rust. However, the four teams in the program have hit the ice with tremendous enthusiasm and great team play. While the female team has been sharpening their skills in preparation for some game-time action, the Junior, Senior B, and Senior A teams have all played exciting hockey with some convincing victories. Unfortunately, the annual showcase game was set aside due to COVID-19 complications, but that did not stop the club from having an enjoyable intrasquad game on a late Saturday night. That was followed up on Sunday after brunch by the second installment of the staff/alumni vs. students contest. There was a great deal of talent on the ice that day and, somehow, the staff/alumni persevered in a fast-paced contest. With league play and Ross Cup on the horizon, February looks to be a busy time on the ice for all four teams. Our basketball seasons are also in full swing and while there have been no tournaments allowed, we have still been fortunate to play league games and single exhibition games at all levels. Our Junior A and B Girls have lost a few tightly contested contests but are showing nice improvement. Meanwhile, our Senior Girls have finally got their full team together and are starting to pick up momentum. After a 1-point loss in their first game back from break, they have proceeded to knock off 4A NDSS and this week won their first league game with Shawnigan Lake School. Hopefully, they can continue to make quick progress as playoffs start almost immediately following the midterm break. On the boys side, we have seen excellent improvement, particularly at the junior level. The “B” boys have had a couple of nice wins to start the year and our Junior A team is coming off a pair of tightly contested 3 point losses to 4A teams Dover Bay and Claremont. The Claremont result was particularly impressive considering our boys had lost to the same team by over 30 points before the holidays. Our senior boys are also rounding into form and have gone undefeated since they returned from break.

Action only gets hotter in February as we get into playoffs and hopefully our ice hockey team will be off for an exciting weekend in Vancouver – we will keep you posted on all the results!
