Athletics Update 1
Spring is in the air and with the province allowing tournaments and playoffs to proceed we definitely have a little more bounce in our step.
Our hockey teams have been extremely busy and the coaches are super proud of their effort and development. For the first time ever we have a full-fledged girls team that has been competing against local women’s teams and had a few tilts with our neighbours up the road at Shawnigan. Even with many girls playing their first-ever competitive hockey games the girls have held their own and results have improved with each passing game. This week all our hockey teams will be playing in our annual Ross Cup tournament and we will finally be able to get our students out to support. We will keep you posted on the results of the Ross Cup in our next edition of the Torch.
In basketball, our Junior Girls had a difficult time building momentum as COVID wreaked havoc on their season. Nonetheless, we saw significant improvements in the team and there are some excellent players who will be moving up to help our seniors in the future. Speaking of seniors, without question one of the most exciting pieces of news this term is that our Senior Girls Basketball Team has qualified for the provincial championships—happening in Langley next week! They earned their berth by winning silver at the Island Championship at St. Michaels last weekend. We will have to check the history books but it has been a very long time since our girls last made the provincial tournament and this group looks poised to make a good run in Langley.
On the boys side, our juniors finished off a terrific season with a dramatic two-point win over Cowichan to earn a berth to the Island Championship. While they did not get the results they were hoping for at Islands, just making that tournament was a major accomplishment for this young and inexperienced group. Our Grade 8/9 boys team will also be busy this week as they play a mid-island round-robin tournament to try to qualify for their island championship. Finally, our Senior Boys are excited to be hosting the 2A Island Championship this coming weekend in the Wheaton gym, where they will try to earn a berth to the Provincial Championships happening March 9-12 in Langley.
In other sporting news, our squash team hosted Shawnigan Lake School for its first interschool competition in almost three years. Though just friendly competition it was wonderful for our students to get to play against some new faces.
With less than one week left in Term 2 sport, we are officially gearing up for what is always a busy third term. Next month we will keep you apprised of how our basketball and hockey teams finish up and will start to look at our competitive third-term teams, which include; Junior and Senior Girls Soccer, Girls and Boys Rugby, golf, tennis, and of course our rowing teams. Whether you are on the water, the fields, the fairways, or the courts, it promises to be an action-packed term and we are excited for what lies ahead.
Have a wonderful spring break!
