Athletics – Winding Down

Feelings are bittersweet as our third and final term of sport draws to an end. Our students have had a fantastic month and are excited for summer but knowing that these are our last few days with our Grade 12s is definitely not easy. The month of May has once again been an extraordinarily busy time for our Brentwood athletes and their efforts have resulted in some strong performances. Our Senior Tennis team recently returned from the Provincial Championship in Vancouver where they finished 8th in the province. In golf action, the team participated in the Island Championship where it finished in fifth. This was one of our golf team’s stronger performances in recent years. The team improved nicely throughout the year and with a young core, the future looks bright. Our Senior Girls Soccer team battled hard at North Islands but despite playing great soccer, could not find a way to put the ball in the net and ultimately fell just short of a berth to Islands. The Senior Boys Rugby team, after defeating SMUS to win the Island Championship, advanced to the provincials where the top 8 teams in the province were represented at the Tier 1 AA level. The boys played excellent rugby in the first two rounds and cruised to the final with a matchup with # 1 ranked Collingwood. After a slow start, and a couple of tough injuries, the team found its groove and managed to take the lead late in the first half. Unfortunately, some costly turnovers and excellent play by a strong Collingwood side eventually lead to a 45-31 loss. Nonetheless, it was an excellent season for the boys and winning Provincial Silver in 15s, to go along with the Bronze in 7s, is a wonderful accomplishment. Our Girls Rugby team, despite being young and inexperienced, showed a great deal of progress this year. They finished 7th in the province in Senior 15s, but with so many players new to the game and many of them in Grade 9 or 10, the future looks bright for this team. The fact that they squad won a Provincial Silver in 7s action is very promising. In Track and Field, we had ten students qualify for the Provincial Championship in Burnaby. These passionate athletes did track in addition to doing their normal Brentwood sport so it meant giving up a great deal of their own free time. Tony E earned Bronze in Junior Boys Shot Put; Keaton H won Bronze in both the Junior Boys 1500m & the 800m; Madison H won Bronze in Senior Women 1500m & a Silver in the 800m; and Siôn G (in between rugby games) won Silver in the Senior Boys Javelin. Finally, in rowing, Ms Biesenthal and her team of coaches took 47 athletes to compete at the National Championship in St Catharines, Ontario. We had 12 boats make the final and brought home three medals:

Gold – Senior Mens 4+

Silver – Senior Mens 8+

Bronze – Junior Mens 2X

There was definitely a great sense of team in the rowing club this year and the school is immensely proud of how these athletes gave their all at Nationals. This wraps up our Torch sporting updates for the year. We will have our third term colors and individual awards presentations on June 13 and we hope to see you at our Closing Ceremonies on June 22nd.
