Many matters can be described as ‘good’, but how many can we classify as AWESOME? Here at Brentwood, as it is such a non-stop environment, it is the little things that we enjoy most. It is a Monday morning. Ugh. I don’t like Mondays. Nobody likes Mondays. Fourth block comes and goes and now you’re on the home stretch, just one more class before lunch. This is your hardest course. Your teacher starts off with a lecture, paired with a PowerPoint presentation. You look at the clock on the left wall and see you still have thirty minutes. You start doodling on the corner of your notebook. Twenty more minutes. You take another look at the clock. Just hit the fifteen-minute mark. Your teacher pauses for a moment. You immediately wonder why he has stopped so abruptly and he appears to be smiling. “You may have early lunch,” he says, and shuts off the projector. You can’t believe it! Is this real life? You and your friends stand up and race through the door, appearing at the cafeteria before the rest of the student body. AWESOME. And what does the white board read? Perogies: the best lunch, ever. Not only did you get an early lunch, but a plate of perogies as well! AWESOME. In Hope House, each pair of girls is assigned to a house job, rotating through every week. Other houses have similar systems. Now, let’s be honest, being in charge of the compost is no one’s dream job. Each compost bucket in the house must be emptied daily. And because Brentwood strives to be as environmentally friendly as possible, we put almost everything into the compost bin: ew. The consequences range from house to house but in Hope, if you fail Daily Inspection, you must do an extra house job; this is determined by the roll of a die. So let’s say you are on compost this week but the girl down the hall failed her Inspection, has rolled the die, and must do compost that night. How does that make you feel? That’s right, AWESOME. The bottom line, it is the smallest pieces of our existences that can allow us to smile most, and realize how AWESOME life can really be. Keep on keeping on.
