Blazing Trails for Terry!

On September 18th, the 42nd annual Terry Fox Run returned as a full in-person community event for the first time in two years. Brentwood families, students, and staff all gathered around the main entrance early Sunday morning, with excitement buzzing through the air.

The B-WELL team, led by Ms Murray, was up even earlier that morning setting up donation stands, refreshments and snacks, along with musical entertainment. Every runner had the opportunity to write, on a sticker, names of people in their lives who had been affected by cancer. They proudly wore these while they ran.

“I am running for my grandpa, because I know his death had a really big impact on my mom’s life, and he was such a big part of my family. So I am remembering him and Terry today” shared Hazel L, Allard ‘23.

Terry Fox was a Canadian athlete, humanitarian, and cancer research activist who set out to run across Canada after losing his leg to cancer at 18 years old. His run was in pursuit of the goal to find a cure for cancer. “As Brentwood is an international school, it is important for those who aren’t familiar with this Canadian tradition to participate in such an impactful event” says Mrs. Langer, Alex Assistant Houseparent.

As soon as the clock struck 10:30 and Mrs Langer started the countdown, the Marathon of Hope began. The bikers zoomed off, while the runners trailed behind. Student volunteers were stationed all along Mill Bay Road, directing traffic and cheering on the oncoming participants. The trail was a total of five kilometers and everyone participating either walked or ran the beautiful ocean-side course. Back on campus, B-WELL volunteers, along with Mr Patel and Mrs Langer, were cheering and congratulating those who crossed the finish line.

A huge thank you goes out to Mrs Langer, Ms Murray, Jenny, and the entire B-WELL team for organizing another phenomenal run. The Terry Fox Run is consistently a special day for everyone on campus, however, this one is particularly memorable because we had the opportunity to run in the Mill Bay community for the first time since 2019. This event was truly an inspiring one for the Brentwood community, and an amazing start to the new school year.
