Bloom Into Change: Women’s Society in Action

At Brentwood, small gestures have been blooming into something much bigger. From planting tulips to organising school-wide initiatives, Brentwood’s Women’s Society has been working hard behind the scenes to cultivate appreciation, awareness, and connection on Brentwood’s campus and in the local community. 

Back in the fall, valued members of the Women’s Society got their hands dirty, literally, by planting tulips in a raised bed created by BEAT. Cross-pollination! This act wasn’t just for decoration of the campus, they were a gesture of gratitude. 

Last week, these tulips were carefully picked when they bloomed, and were given to House Moms to show our appreciation. This was a simple act, but it carried a deeper meaning. The tulips represented the constant care and support we receive from our Houseparents, and how lucky we are to have them. 

In November, WS led a breast cancer awareness campaign, which included a thoughtful presentation in Assembly and handing out pink ribbons in the houses for donations of support and awareness. Co-Captain Chloe D, Alexandra ‘26, said, “Women’s Society helps people feel not alone. We make a difference by talking with each other.” 

In March, for International Women’s Day, representatives and members made a sweet video that brought the entire school together. Boys and girls contributed to the video after asking, “What woman do you appreciate the most?” Most answers were “My Mom”, “My Houseparent”, or even the occasional “My sister”. The messages of empowerment and unity reminded everyone of the importance of uplifting and supporting our peers and staff in this little community. This was a powerful moment of connection in Assembly, seeing our peers in a different light and bonding in appreciation. Co-Captain, Gracie B, said, “Being Captain this year has really helped me improve my leadership skills through hosting meetings and organising volunteer opportunities for our members.” 

While the majority of the action does happen within Brentwood, recently donation bins have been set up in houses, where students can donate clothes and unused hygiene products to Cowichan Women Against Violence society, helping other women in need. This initiative provides awareness about an issue that is often overlooked and essential resources that every woman should have. 

In the future, the Women’s Society is continuing its good work with card writing planned for Mothers’ Day. Students will be given the opportunity to write heartfelt cards to the mother figures in their lives, and again be able to bond with peers through these initiatives. Women’s Society emphasizes appreciation and connection, as without those two key elements, the club wouldn’t be able to function at such a high level as it has this year. 

I would like to extend my gratitude to the valued members, Captains Gracie and Chloe, and their teacher sponsor, Mr Gibson, for all their hard work this year in creating a better Brentwood. Of course, I would also like to thank the women in my life who always support me. 

Women’s Society proves that each project causes meaningful change, and this change doesn’t always come from a grand gesture. Whether you give away a beautiful tulip, donate products and clothes, or pen a hand-written card, you show compassion and care for your peers, and I think Women’s Society does an excellent job at just that.
