Breaking Down AP Lit: Challenge, Discussion, and Growth

In a world of shrinking attention spans and diverse opinions, AP Literature 12 allows students to slow down and think deeper, turning every story into something worth questioning. More than a reading course, AP Lit is where novels become conversations, poems become puzzles, and a single line can spark an entire class debate. As one of Brentwood’s most academically demanding English courses, it pushes students to analyze language with precision, write with purpose, and step into perspectives far beyond their own. By the time students reach the final page, they don’t just understand literature, they understand people.

“Although fictional novels weren’t my favorite, I’ve really loved seeing myself fall in love with the books I’m reading and writing about them in my essays,” shares Archie B, Privett ’26.

Felix D, Whittall ’26, echoes this sentiment: “I’m someone who honestly isn’t a big fan of writing. But I decided to take on this challenge, and I’m so happy I did. I can confidently say I’m a much better writer, English student, and of course, speaker.”

Open to highly motivated Grade 12 students, the course is full of adventures. But it’s about far more than essay writing. At the start of the year, students took part in group reads and poem recitals, and most recently completed Melhuish II, where they wrote and delivered their own motivational speeches to the class. Looking ahead, students will continue practicing free-response questions, sharpening their ability to analyze literary techniques and apply their understanding of texts to a range of AP prompts. Of course, beyond exam preparation, students are excited to explore new works, enjoy the beautiful days outside in the sun reading, and make the most of their final months together before everyone heads their own way.

None of this would be possible without Brentwood’s dedicated AP Literature teachers: Mr Ganley, Ms Widenmaier, and my English teacher for three years, Ellis Assistant Houseparent Mr Toby Collis Handford. His kindness, guidance, and passion show up every day. Whether through live marking sessions in class or in his home office, where he welcomes students in for extra support, he brings energy, positivity, and humour that make even the most challenging assignments feel manageable.

“A passion for reading can be a lifelong boon; I feel immensely grateful to have the opportunity to teach this rewarding course – made all the more rewarding given the fact I am teaching some students I have now taught for three years in a row!” shares Mr Collis Handford. A huge thank you goes to Brentwood for offering courses like AP Literature 12, where students are pushed to discover their potential as readers, writers, and thinkers. To TCH, I can’t believe I’ve had you as my English teacher throughout my entire Brentwood journey. I’ll cherish the time we have left before this chapter comes to a close.

In the meantime, I’m looking forward to the memories, growth, and results our class will accomplish together – and ensuring the rest of the year stays “lit”!
