Brentwood Hosts ISA Volleyball

It is the peak of the competitive high school volleyball season for Brentwood athletes which means that the girls have been putting their best passes forward in order to elevate their performance. This past weekend the team was able to showcase their hard work at ISAs, a tournament between BC independent schools.

The return of the tournament after a year off came as a delight to the athletes given the cancellation of competitions due to COVID-19 last year. Brentwood was excited to host teams from the Mainland and Vancouver Island in the Foote Center, with its impressive facilities.

We started with a nail-biter of a match against Mulgrave – we won in three sets. Middle blocker Kay Kay, Mack ‘23, remarked that “It was an intense yet fun game, it was truly amazing that we could host such an important tournament like ISAs.” The day continued with a piece of cake match and a win in two sets against Shawnigan. For the final game of the day, the team faced up against York House, the number one team in the province, and played a tough match, ultimately leading to our only loss of the day. This put us in second position in our pool going into the next day.

After a night of rest, the team was ready to take on another day of tough competition. We came out swinging and beat SMUS for the second time this season, launching us into the semi-finals. Brentwood Volleyball fought hard but ended up losing to Crofton House, who went on to win the championship. For the bronze medal – and our last game of the tournament – we faced off against West Point Grey Academy. It was another tough match after a long weekend of games and the team lost, ending up fourth of the eight contestants.

Even though the result of the matches was not exactly what the team had hoped for, we put forward a strong effort and learned a lot from facing some of the top teams in the province. “Our losses on the last day were tough, but ultimately we learned a lot about what we can improve going forward” observed Maxine P, Alex ‘23. The Brentwood Volleyball team will carry lessons learned during ISAs on to the many tournaments to come including this Friday and Saturday at the Belmont Invitational.
