Brentwood Music Department scores more Silver & Gold
On Wednesday the 28th of April, the Jazz Band and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, headed up to Nanaimo for the annual West Coast Jazz Festival. This festival is a qualifier for Music Fest Canada, so the standards are high.
Dressed “to the nines”, the six members of the Vocal Jazz Ensemble, (Shannon W., Michaela M., Maggie D., Charlotte W., Hope K. and Min K.), impressed the adjudicators with their show style renditions of It had better be tonight, Fever, Unforgettable and Let’s do it. Backed by a great rhythm section with Thomas Kinzel on piano, Katie C. on upright bass, and Conor E. on drums, the Vocal Jazz Ensemble scored an “excellent” Silver certificate.
Later on it was the Jazz Band’s turn. Consisting of 15 musicians, the band took the stage at Vancouver Island University’s auditorium with four contrasting selections: Sentimental Journey, Cheesecake, Pure Imagination and Cantaloupe Island. The adjudicators were impressed with the overall sound of the band and remarked on some of the great solo work by Charlotte W. on trumpet, Stephen C. on Saxophone, and Conor E. on drums. Their effort earned them a “superior” Gold certificate and a hamburger and fries at Mrs. Riches restaurant in Nanaimo.
