On Sunday, the population of downtown Victoria, British Columbia increased by 500 people. It generated an economic boom. Reports say retail and restaurant sales increased by 150%, and the Victoria stock market was driven through the roof by this sudden increase in impulse purchases and expensive lunches.

This financial shift was only temporary however, because the city was given the pleasure of having the entire Brentwood community roam its streets for a while. It was the annual Victoria trip – a Sunday of opportunity for students to buy whatever and do whatever in town for the day. All the students were bused down in the morning by house with few opting to stay back. There, they got to buy all those miscellaneous items they’d need to function for the rest of the year at BCS. Just about everyone came home with something newly purchased, and a lot of cash was dealt that day.

Some popular destinations included Mayfair Mall, and the Bay Centre downtown. Those are some of the go-tos for primary shopping retail. There is a variety of restaurants within the vicinity too, and Chinatown is not far away either. “It was fun to go around the streets and try a restaurant that is new or go into a clothing store you hadn’t before,” says Maurits F, Whittall ‘20. If not searching for food, there was the option to take in the sights down by the harbour, or explore around the Empress and the legislative building. Needless to say, there were a few options to keep everyone preoccupied. As Iysus D, Mack ‘20 said, “It was nice to start off the year with a good shopping trip.” With it now behind us, it is another checkpoint crossed in the early stages of this school year, though there is still plenty more to come.
