Brentwood vs. Belmont Boys Basketball

This past Tuesday, the Brentwood Junior and Senior Boys Basketball teams made their annual trip to Belmont to scrimmage their respective teams. This would be both squads’ first game against competition, allowing us to gauge where we are, test out various lineups, and see where improvement is needed. Both Mr. Gage and Mr. Sullivan emphasized they were going to be focused on the defensive end of the game, ensuring players were active with their feet and hands and staying in front of their checks. While the Juniors lost a tight game, 49-51, the Seniors earned a different fate. The first few minutes were a bit rough and rushed, as expected for the team in the early stages of the season. As the first half wore on, however, the team settled down and keyed in on the defensive end, grabbing steals and forcing stops that led to easy layups on the other end. At halftime, the score was 45-32 in our favour. During the break, both coaches told the team to make the game easier by playing lockdown defense and getting easy transition baskets, as well as taking our time on the offensive end and running motion. In the second half, Brentwood made improvements on the defensive end and continued to move the ball on offense, leading to an array of three-pointers and open shots around the rim. This enabled the team to expand their lead, winning by a final margin of 30 points: 93-63. Brendan S, Ellis ‘18 led the team with 31 points, including 6 three-pointers while Aaron S, Rogers ‘17 contributed 18 points and 9 assists to the winning effort, orchestrating the offense beautifully. Newcomers Somto D, Rogers ‘18 and Cole H, Whittall ‘17 proved to be forces to be reckoned with, scoring 8 and 6 points, respectively. This was a great way to unofficially start the season, though both players and coaches realize that there is huge room for improvement on both ends of the court if the teams want to be playing late into February and March. Up next, the Senior Boys face Mark Isfeld in a scrimmage on Friday. But for now, they’ll take the W. Olamide O, Privett (#1 in Interhouse) ‘18
