Building Momentum: Senior Girls Soccer Kicks Off!

The start of a new season always brings a mix of nerves and excitement, and this year, the Senior Girls Soccer team has a fun journey ahead of them. With mixed rosters featuring several younger players stepping into key roles, the start of the season has been less about the scoreboard and more about finding a tempo and building a connection on and off the field.

This past weekend was the team’s first major test – a tournament hosted by the University of Victoria. It was a rollercoaster. The first day was defined by two gruelling matches that both ended in nail-biting penalty shootouts; the results did not go our way, but the composure shown by such a young group during a high-pressure moment like this was an early sign of potential.

Proving they aren’t easily discouraged, the team showed up the following day with determination and secured a 2-1 win against Carihi Secondary. In our fourth game in two days, facing Brooks Secondary from Powell River, we capped off the tournament with a poetic finish, a victory in a penalty shootout. “It was so much fun winning in shootouts, and it was such a good way to end the tournament,” says Fiona C, Hope ‘26. Receiving our team award for the tournament was Nev K, Mack ’26. She played great all weekend, scoring the winning penalty kick in our last game.

Looking forward, nothing is slowing down here! Next up, the team heads to ISAs hosted at St. Michael’s University School, where we are set to face some of the toughest competition yet. While the matches will undoubtedly be challenging, the coaches and players are ready to learn and play. For a young team just getting to know each other, there is no better way to grow than by testing their skills against top-tier opponents. “With the Brentwood Regatta happening the same weekend, it is challenging with the loss of players, but it is always a great way to develop as a team,” shares Head Coach Mr. Barrett.

“I believe our team will only get better. It’s only the start of the season, and we are getting better and better each game,” shares Rachael H, Mack ‘27, who has been a part of the soccer program for three years. As spring is on the horizon with good vibes bringing amazing energy, it will definitely be a fun third term.
