A new school year brings exciting opportunities for students to explore post-secondary and career options through the Career Education Program. With time in the academic morning allocated for students to learn more about their strengths, interests, and options, the hallways are buzzing with talk about future plans. After only a month of school, students are excited about the program and all of the resources at their fingertips: "The aspect that excites me most about the Career-Life Education course is learning to make educated decisions about school courses, post-secondary options, and eventually the careers that will suit me best and that I will love" observed Rosie K, Alex ‘22. “With anyone’s final year of high school comes a thousand questions about the future and what lies ahead. Brentwood students are no different. We search for our new beginnings and navigate through the never-ending stacks of university pamphlets and post-secondary literature. We grapple for advice, and maybe even someone to tell us just what to do. Although we are the only ones who can make these decisions for ourselves, we also have access to a network of hundreds of individuals who have walked the same path we find ourselves stumbling upon. Right at our fingertips, Brentonian Connect has the ability to link us with alumni all across the world, and together they have studied at just about any university you can think of. Their diverse backgrounds and unique fields are nothing short of inspirational and give us access to some of the greatest professionals in areas we are reaching for. This tool is one that I know we grads are unbelievably grateful for, and we cannot wait to see what our new mentoring relationships hold for us in the future” wrote Sophia. K, Allard ‘20. In addition to classroom activities, students have the option to attend Career Education Speaker Series events throughout the year. Alumni are eager to return to campus to share stories about their experiences after Brentwood, that have lead them to where they are today. Events are themed with topics relevant to challenges students might be facing when it comes to making tough decisions that will impact their future. Students are in the process of reaching out to potential mentors on the Brentonian Connect, and a total of 33 new mentor-mentee connections have been established since the beginning of October. This adds to the 130+ mentor relationships that remain active from last year. With such a positive response from the students, we look forward to watching the Career Education Program continue to grow and take shape as the year progresses.
