Chatting and Cheering at Chalmers’
As the year has kicked off with a sunny start, Mr Chalmers has been welcoming a medley of different grade groups and Houses to his residences for an evening barbecue, including relaxing by the Mill Bay estuary with his dog Chloe, and building giant Jenga in an ongoing sub-interhouse competition.
This barbecue has been particularly special to many of the Grade 12s, who are experiencing many of their “lasts” as their final year of Brentwood has just begun. However, growing up – as proven by the ever-growing connections between housemates – does not mean growing apart. Sitting in a circle while enjoying a delicious meal of steak and prawns, a highlight shared by Ava B, Hope ‘27 was “learning about everyone’s weirdest and deepest secrets,” affectionately noting that it was the “most bonding [Hope] has had together”. This sentiment of connection was reflected throughout the night in the shared laughs, shared love, and Hope’s special achievement of a 37-level-high Jenga tower.
It was not only Hope enjoying a beautiful night oceanside. One week prior, Allard enjoyed a similar night of eating, laughing, and towering Jenga. According to Cooper F, Allard ‘27, “Grade 12 barbecues are special, because they’re some of the last times we’ll all be together and enjoying each other’s company.” She followed up by giving a much-deserved thanks to Mr Chalmers and the staff present at the barbecue, expressing how they do “an incredible job making an experience for us that I know will last” – words that every attendee over the weeks of barbecueing could definitely agree with.
These barbecues were not exclusive to the graduating class in their respective houses, either. Mr. Chalmers and the staff aiding in these nights of delicious food and fun also extended their hospitality to other grades, welcoming Grade 9s, 10s, and 11s. However, they serve as a special moment for the Grade 12s to reflect on their time here at the school, with each passing day bringing them closer to their graduation.
Although many of these “lasts” are approaching – a sunset barbecue with the Head of School included – many Grade 12s are finding solace knowing that if there is one thing that won’t be coming to an end anytime soon, it is the connections built during their time here at Brentwood that will last a lifetime.
