Cherry blossoms

The sight of the Sakura trees in full bloom is a vivid reminder that spring has arrived. For me, it is the most special and eagerly awaited season. The sun shines brightly on the verdant fields where students compete in spikeball and enjoy each other’s company, and the weather warms up enough for us to enjoy the refreshing ocean waters.

When I feel stressed or overwhelmed in school, I like to take the time to appreciate the nature around me. Growing up in a busy city, Tokyo, Japan, I was somewhat separated from Mother Nature, something that I truly love and appreciate. I would wake up and look out the window to see traffic and tall buildings but barely any trees, mountains or bodies of water which is a great contrast to what we experience here in Mill Bay. But, with a busy tripartite schedule at Brentwood, we can sometimes forget about how fortunate we are to experience this every day.

Through many of our classes, we get the opportunity to explore the nature around us. On April 12, the Geology and Biology class went on a field trip to Botanical Beach in Port Renfrew to explore different rock formations and enjoy the beauty on the Island. Kaelin D, Whittall ‘23 in Geology felt that “It was extremely rewarding to discover such an amazing place on the Island.” Although much of our learning happens here on campus, it is safe to say that exploring the world beyond Mill Bay has its benefits by opening new perspectives.

It is easy to take things for granted. However, taking a step back and appreciating what is given to us in our daily life goes a long way. It’s not every day you wake up to a blue sky and the beautiful cherry blossoms, so why not take the time to look up and find the joy in the little things in life.
