As the holiday season approached, Mackenzie House filled with Christmas cheer. The house has been decorated from top to bottom, ranging from lights, to trees, to garlands, and more, completed by multiple students.

Within the house, Secret Santa took place over the last three days of school. Each person received someone within the house to provide with a few goodies for Christmas. On the first day, a note or gift was given to show our appreciation for each other. Day #2, a small treat, and on the last day a larger gift that was received in front of the entire house. A ‘Mack Fams’ event also took place in the final week. Thank You to Ms Ramundi, who took time to make tons of cookies for the house so we could bond with each other while decorating them.

Each year the house participates in a giving back initiative. The staff, students, and family members associated with the house raised a total of $1900. This money went to two Cowichan Valley single-parent families. With the generosity of the Mackenzie, both families will be able to have a Christmas of their own including many gifts under their trees. “The more you give from a place of unconditional generosity, the more joy you’ll feel. The recipients of your kindness will remember this their whole lives!” stated Nurse Decker, who spent her time shopping for the families.

On the final night before break, the members of the house gathered in Crooks Hall for one last meal together, prepared by the incredible Food Services Staff. “It was nice to get dressed up and celebrate the end of the year together” reflected Lilli S, Mackenzie ‘23. Back at the house we all shuffled into the common room, where the house staff received gifts and thank yous from the house and advisor groups, which was followed by the Concert For A Winter’s Eve. The night ended with a surprise appearance of Santa who delivered presents to each person so we could thank our Secret Santas and get our final gifts of the week. Our guest also overjoyed the house by reading The Grinch by Dr Seuss, a Mackenzie tradition.

As always, Christmas in Mackenzie is filled with many traditions and surprises which bring the house closer together.
