Deft feet pounded persistently, imbedding themselves in the soft mud. Oaks towering above were a green shelter which became our stadium whilst the crisp autumn leaves crunching under our soles were the track. The stillness of the silent air was broken by the rhythmic breathing, accelerating in pace with the increasing gradient. Despite always starting runs at sea level, the intrepid gravity warriors of the Brentwood Competitive Cross Country Team conquered the elements this fall term. Starting our journey in the Mill Bay area, we began to venture farther into the wilderness. Needing a respite from the September heat, we travelled to Thetis Lake and frolicked in the water after a challenging new run. Then came October: we breezed the trails of the Kinsol Trestle area, but only the most resilient would brave the icy waters. In November, Mt Tzouhalem presented us with near vertical assents and ample challenge for the traction of our running shoes worn thin by months of heavy use. Valiant efforts were rewarded by a breathtaking view of Cowichan Bay at the summit and the essential team photograph. The route along Skutz Falls, closely following the meandering path of the river, tested our agility over the intertwined layers of roots that covered our winding path. Finally, with a bottomless pot of chili, the season’s work was celebrated by the team in the quaint home of our beloved coach, Mr Rob Rose, and his darling wife. There was much accomplishment to acknowledge as the team finished the competitive season with astonishing results. At the Island Age Group finals at Elk Lake the group finished third in Junior Boys and third in Senior Girls. The next week, at the high school provincial qualifier, Tara B advanced to the finals after an inspiring run. Subsequently, Tara flattened her division of the BC Athletics provincial championship and advanced to Nationals in Vancouver. Tara B, Berit B & Pascale B
