Destination Imagination Eight

It was a sunny Friday afternoon when our Grade 8 class left on a bus to Courtenay for our Destination Imagination competition. During the drive up island, we drove the bus driver crazy with noise. After what seemed to take days, we arrived at our hotel in Courtenay. After everyone got settled into the hotel rooms, we left on foot to Boston Pizza for dinner. After a pizza feast, we all made our way over to the movie theatre on the other side of the street. We watched a fantastic G rated movie called Zootopia, which was selected by Mrs. Patel (apparently last year’s movie selection was less ‘appropriate’. Our chaperones weren’t taking any chances this year! 😉 After the movie, the class walked back to our hotel and everyone went to bed as we had an early start the next morning. The team competition involved planning and building with some groups planning a skit and others building a light structure designed to hold as much weight as possible which could also be played as a musical instrument. Brentwood had winning teams in each challenge. For the musical mashup category, the winning Brentwood team had a structure constructed of fine balsa wood weighing only 90 grams which supported over 300 pounds and could be played as a pipe. For the improv contest, our winning team created a humorous three-minute skit which involved a mysterious stranger, a news flash, a confined space, and a prop constructed out of newspaper. The bus ride home on Saturday was just as loud as it had been the day before. I think that everyone had a great time and I would highly recommend Destination Imagination to next year’s Grade 8 class.
