Elk Lake Spring Regatta – Mud and Victory

Elk Lake Spring Regatta – Mud and Victory

17 March 2011deirdre and reuben

This past weekend Brentwood rowers gave up their sleep-ins to row at the Elk Lake Spring Regatta. It was a time of mixed weather. The strong winds and rain made the rowing difficult, and after five hours the parking lot that our truck was on had turned into a sea of mud. But the rowers of the Brentwood College Rowing Club did not care; their whole focus was on their races.

This athletic attitude in regard to race preparations, despite challenging conditions, was the reason why we of the BCRC came back on Sunday afternoon with 8 gold Medals.
Despite little recent practice time in any of our combinations due to the on-going rough water, the girls’ team maintained a great spirit over the weekend. A notable result was the Junior A Women’s Coxed Four of Deirdre H, Claire V, Steph T, Liz A and coxie Erica M which finished in second place, first among school crews, holding off both Shawnigan boats. The Junior B Girls’ 8+ of Erica M, Stacey K, Spencer M, Lexy K, Spencer B, Sophia T, Kaitlyn S, Katherine P and Kelsey S also placed second.

The senior girls’ eight of Stacey K, Claire V, Deirdre H, Liz A, Steph T, Tamsyn C, Kelly R, Sadie C and Erica M finished fifth. Although not as many boats made finals as was usual for the girls, the weekend was a rewarding learning experience, not to mention a load of fun. Well done ladies!

In boys’ action, most of our seniors were highly decorated with the 4x of Ruben S, Martin B, Lance B and Andrew C, the 2x of Ruben and Martin 4+, the Jr 4+, and the Junior 8+ of Joel C, Blaine W, Tony D, Nick R, Ian S, Hayden F, Jonathan H, Harrison B and Nicholas W all won their events.
