“Fire me up, Brentwood!”

As the leaves turn darker, the weather gets chillier, and students trek to classes in the morning mist, there is an event that gets Brentwood students counting down the days for: Showcase Volleyball.

Much like other showcase events, the crowd goes wild to see friends and peers compete against some of the top teams on Vancouver Island. Showcase Volleyball, however, stands out as one of the most exciting and electric games for all of Brentwood to see.

On November 3, students had a choice: do homework for two hours or watch the Senior A Volleyball team battle against one of their top rivals, AAAA Dover Bay Secondary. At exactly 7:00 p.m., the students filled the gym with massive signs, sporting red and black to support the team. Head Prefect, Simret S, Mack ‘24, and Aysha D, Allard ‘24 were phenomenal MCs as they set the tone for the extremely competitive match as they announced the starting lineup and pumped up the crowd.

The match consisted of painstakingly long rallies and nerve-wracking saves, as well as absolute stuff blocks from Captain, Kennedy H, Mack ‘24. After the nerves and adrenaline settled, we took the first set, 25-18. With a longstanding rivalry with Dover and a record of 2-1, the last thing we wanted was to allow things to get even. Knowing this, we minimized our errors and played scrappy defence, not letting anything touch the floor. We swept Dover 3-0 and played two extra sets winning the first and losing the second.

Before leaving for the Head of the Lake Regatta, Assistant Coach Ms Manton reminded us to stay dialled into the match with a catchphrase she commonly screams: “Fire me up, Brentwood”.

We did just that.

A massive thank you to Ms Fougner, Ms Toporowski, Mr Minkler, Dover Bay, Maggie Z, Hope ‘24, Yearbook Captain team for spectacular photos, and the entire Brentwood family for coming out to support the Senior A Volleyball team. It would not have been the same without any of you.
