Goodbye Beattys
With the end of the school year approaching, many of us are hit with the realisation that we will be saying goodbye to many people, students and teachers alike. A goodbye that will bring me to tears is when I say farewell to the Beattys. Mrs. Beatty, Mr. Beatty, their daughter Lauren, and their dog Summit have been amazing, influential factors in my Brentwood experience. Mrs. Beatty came to Brentwood two years ago to be Hope’s new Assistant Houseparent and to teach French. Her first year at Brentwood was mine as well and I constantly took comfort in her advice on how to adjust to and understand the Brentwood lifestyle. Returning girls in her advisor groups fondly look back at our advisor meetings last year, crowded around the coffee table in her living room, trying to figure out what we wanted to study next year as Summit tried to attack us with licks. In the new house Mrs. Beatty has become not only someone the girls look up to, but someone who many feel they can trust and go to in times of trouble. Her joyous laugh and motherly nature will be missed next year. Some of my favourite teacher moments are with Mr. Beatty: from his silly dancing during Hope interhouse (or even if the Hope girls were having a Saturday night dance party) to his humor in International Relations, I know that Mr. Beatty brings a smile to many faces. Having a new teacher the same year that you’re a new student is worrying, but my fear soon vanished once I realised how amazing Mr. Beatty was. He didn’t rush topics and really focused on group work and projects to make classes fun and engaging while ensuring that we were learning all the test material. I’ve heard from students in the other classes that Mr. Beatty is the perfect balance between work and fun. I know that all his students will miss him and his fresh, exciting projects (and silly dance moves) when he leaves the Brentwood community at the end of they year. Mr. Beatty has also played a large role in boys’ rowing down in the boathouse. Though I would prefer if Mr. and Mrs. Beatty never left Brentwood, I know that they will have an amazing adventure as they move to Toronto. We will always think of them fondly and wish them good luck in this new chapter of their lives; there will always be happy memories of them here. Caitlin C, Hope ‘17
