Grade Nines Take On The Outdoors

Far too bright and early on the Grade 9’s third morning at Strathcona Park Lodge, we hauled our monstrously overpacked bags down to the docks to pack our canoes for the overnight trip.

When we were done packing our food supplies and getting the last tastes of pescetarianism food, half of the Grade 9 class hopped into their canoes and started their journey to the “Land of the silver birch; home of the beaver” as Mr Wismer, Ellis Houseparent, called the Great Canadian Outdoors.

As many past 9s will tell you, this is the most dreaded activity of the year. Given the ruthless comments made by past 9s, we were not too thrilled about this challenging journey. However, once we landed and unpacked at our various destinations around Strathcona Park, we instantly discovered that this was going to be a great night – one to remember.

The food was great, the tarps kept us dry, and the fire was warm. From spending countless hours chilling on the beach to having the best fireside meal ever, to witnessing Ms Hall go crazy around the campfire, this group of cheerful and optimistic grade nines concluded, “Hey this isn’t that bad!” as Alana H, Hope 23 reflected.
