Hoops & Hype: The Senior Girls’ Basketball Team

Sneakers are squeaking, whistles are blowing, and the energy in the gym is electric: Senior Girls Basketball is back! Coming into this season, there were plenty of concerns; after losing key graduating players, many wondered how the squad would look this year. With big shoes to fill, the girls knew that a lot of work lay ahead of them, but if the start of the season is any indication, this team is more than up for the challenge.

With new additions to the team, including former juniors or athletes new to the sport, we don’t just have new faces; we also have fresh energy coming from the coaching staff. The team is excited to welcome Mr Jaden Ma, Ellis House BFA, as the new Assistant Coach! He has been a great addition to the team, bringing lively energy to practice and games. Mr Ma takes time to help “strengthen our skills,” says Willa S, Hope ‘27. “He is in the gym on Wednesday’s offering an open gym to get some extra shots up.” He has been fantastic. Bringing a spark of positivity to the team, he has already made a positive impact on the players’ confidence.

The coaching staff also features veterans Ms Jillian Napier and Ms Candace Bates. Stepping onto the court this season, the girls have come out swinging. Coach Bates is thrilled to announce that the team is “currently undefeated in league play!” Through grit, hustle, and hard work, the team has proven that with some unfamiliar faces, the culture remains the same. With promising wins against Shawnigan, Ladysmith, and Queen Margaret’s, the season is looking good.

This schedule isn’t slowing down anytime soon! Continuing into the new year, things start to become more serious. With many more league games against previous opponents, they also face some new challenges within the next month. This includes the Southridge Charity Classic in Surrey, where the team will have to face top teams in the province, then the RCMP Tournament will take place in Victoria the following week. These two events will be a challenge to overcome, but the players are ready to show what they’re made of.

Continuing the season, the girls still have many games to be played and memories to be made. Beyond the outcome, the focus remains on growth, teamwork, and, of course, having a blast on the court. We are ready for what is next, and we continue to have fun together.
