In Foreign Waters

With an event as large as the Brentwood Regatta, where many crews amass for the weekend, the social and welcoming atmosphere encompasses all. I had the pleasure to catch up with a few members of a visiting crew for a brief chat about their experiences this weekend.

From Portland, Oregon is the Rose City Rowing Crew. The girls, Molly and Ella, chatted happily with me, explaining that this was their first year and that they arrived on Thursday night, eager to row. “What do you think of your first Regatta so far? Would you come back?” I ask.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” says Molly. “Stressful, but fun.”

“We definitely want to come back next year. The campus is gorgeous and the people are so nice!” Ella tells me.

When asked what their favourite parts of the trip have been, Molly explains that she’s really enjoyed getting to know her crew much better. “I’ve loved the feeling of becoming a community, with my teammates and coaches,” Ella says. “That sense of anticipation and then the accomplishment after finishing your races.”

I was also introduced to an old hat. This being his third year and the boy tells me that he has enjoyed seeing familiar faces and slowly forming connections with other crews. When asked what his highlights are, Jon says “The last race of the day; I get to look forward to the nice weather, and the food… Oh, and I like the conversations while washing boats.”

I thanked them for their time and wished them the best of luck on their upcoming races.
