Interhouse Basketball Jamboree – A Foote Centre Classic

Interhouse events are when your friends in other houses are no longer your friends.

Houses go head-to-head, fiercely bedazzled in house attire from head to toe when competing in interhouse events. From September through June, the intensity and suspense of which sister-brother cohort will end triumphant remains present. Our most recent event, Interhouse Basketball, did not fall short of expectations. We all gathered in the Foote, which was a sight to behold: gladiators in the Colosseum looking to prove themselves.

The cheers of spectators rounding the courts from the first jump balls roared one end of the gym to the other. The first games (of two six-minute halves) were played between Junior Boys, with Privett House topping Ellis, and Whittall beating Rogers. The boys were thrilling to watch. Those who are members of the basketball program demonstrated their ball-handling, defensive and shooting skills taught by Junior Boys coach, Mr Pasquale. A particular young athlete who stood out with his swift play-making ability, Aidan L, Whittall ‘25, felt “energized by the crowd because they were all cheering” which made him “hustle and try to make good plays for the team.”

Girls teams, made up of the best junior and senior ball players, promptly started their games following the boys. Allard took an unfortunate loss to Alexandra, while Mackenzie took their spot in the championship bracket over Hope. Alexandra’s Miranda NP, ‘23, who played exceptionally well, was content that her team also played “extremely well” and was proud “of how many girls stepped up to represent Alex”, adding that she thought her team “definitely surprised a few people.” The championship game for the girls, played between Mackenzie and Alexandra, was hair-raising. The girls put on a show as many screeching onlookers were on the edges of their seats or the tips of their toes. Dramatically, Mackenzie took the win, in a close game, 14 points for yellow and 12 for purple.

Then, the Senior Boys games. Whittall matched up against Ellis, with Ellis following the trend of their sisters in Mackenzie by also taking a well-deserved win. Rogers conquered the Privett blues, leaving the championship in the hands of Ellis or Rogers. Similar to the girls’ title game, it was electrifying to watch the Senior Boys give it their all. The green of Ellis and yellow of Mackenzie left a mark on all the other houses, as this brother/sister house duo took championships in two categories: girls and senior boys. Ellis netted 14 while Rogers put up 11 in the Senior Boys championship.
