On the one-month anniversary of the earthquake in Japan, the Brentwood community rallied once again to raise funds for our Pacific Rim neighbour. Through the leadership of the SPARC, an international dress-up day and evening dance were held this past Saturday. The dress-up day encouraged students to proudly display their national pride, creating a multicultural atmosphere. Every student participated or made a contribution to the cause, a testament to the philanthropic nature of Brentwood students.

The international dress-up day was a success in both participation and funds raised, which exceeded the $500 goal at $533! This sum will be added to the $1000 already raised in support of the relief efforts by the Japanese Red Cross. In addition to raising money, Brentwood students have been busy making paper cranes for the good fortune of the Japanese people. With 500 already completed, SPARC reps are in the process of completing 500 more to bring the tally up to 1,000.

In addition to raising funds for the Japanese relief effort, Saturday’s events were also dedicated to raising funds for the Brentwood Relay for Life team. After the inspiring personal story shared by Noud H at last Thursday’s assembly, over 100 students have signed up to participate. The proceeds of the international dance and food fair, added to money already raised by the Alex House daffodil sales, brings the tally to over $1700 for the Canadian Cancer Society. This sum is a wonderful step in the direction of the $5000 goal.

Although this is, unfortunately, the first year without our long-standing Charity Work Day, it is clear that the charitable spirit of Brentwood has not been diminished.
