Island Championships – the real season begins!

The often quoted line from professional sports that the real season starts when the regular season is complete has a great deal of truth. The same can be said for high school sports, and especially basketball, a sport that has more high schools with teams playing than any other in the province. Brentwood meets Esquimalt High School for the second time in two weeks as the squad will meet their Victoria rivals in the first round of the Island Championships this Thursday. Although Brentwood won both games, the Esquimalt squad enters the tournament healthy and boasts two players of exceptional quality. At the forefront of Brentwood’s minds will be the stinging defeat at the hands of Esquimalt last season at this same tournament that saw the Dockers move on to the Provincials, leaving Brentwood to think what might have been. This encounter will, without doubt, provide an absorbing contest between the two schools. Over the past two seasons, a great deal of respect has been generated between the players on the squads, and Thursday’s game will add another chapter in a quickly emerging rivalry. Tip-off on Thursday is 2 p.m. at Ladysmith Community School.
