3rd term rugby season was the cherry on top of a good year despite our team suffering from several injuries. We began the year with our first game against Claremont. Many players who had never played a game of rugby before left their hearts out on the field and we earned a win. We also grew together as a unit and were now even more ready to work hard as a team. We then confronted Shawnigan Lake School’s Junior A team. Although we suffered injuries, we came back having scored two tries and making many good hits. Although we were defeated, the team put 110% into the game and proved that we would not back down. We then trained very thoroughly for the upcoming Scrumfest where we lost our first game to a team from Kamloops. Our heads weren’t up for that game; we weren’t prepared. Thanks to inspiring words from Coach Grisdale, we prepared ourselves mentally for the next game. Our final game in Scrumfest was against a team from North Vancouver who reigned superior on skills; however this did not stop our junior team. With our defensive line impenetrable and our offensive line filled with speed and skill, we gave this team a run for their money. We may have tied them in the end, but we did impress. Our season continued with several more matches against teams such as Oak Bay, Saint Michaels University School, Saint Georges, and Cowichan. Near the end of our season we had our final tournament: Islands. Our first game of Islands we lost to Claremont, which meant that we couldn’t place. Although our season had some losses, we still gave it our all. I can say that the improvement that was shown from the team was incredible. For a lot of the team it was their first year of playing rugby or even playing a contact sport. The heart and grit that was put into every cold rainy practice and every fierce game came out in the end to show that this Junior Boys team will endeavor through anything. We couldn’t do this without the constant support of our coaches, Mr. Norwood, Mr. Cowie, and our Head Coach, Mr. Grisdale. Our Grade 10s also gave great leadership. Though most of our team move into senior rugby, we still have great boys who will lead the team next year in what will hopefully be as unforgettable as the season we just had.
