The Junior Girls Soccer team’s season sadly came to an end on May 1st. Right from the beginning, the girls worked hard. Having girls who were new to the sport and others who have played for many years, the team put their all into practice. Our humorously sceptical coach, Mr. Collis, was an accepting and patient teacher of the team while talking about “the mystic arts of feng shui”, though he had different thoughts when he first saw his so-called “soccer team”. He announced, “When I first laid eyes upon this year’s junior team, I thought, mournfully. This is the nadir of my athletic existence. Surely," he moaned, "this is Blake Gage’s petty way of taking revenge. I cannot make bricks without straw, damn it!" Coach Collis continued. “I am not one to give up”, so he took the challenge. “The rogue’s gallery of players I was expected to turn into a team were beyond the pale. Janey? Incorrigible. Quin? Heathen. Jessica? Destined for prison. Sasha runs like a anaesthetized deer on ice skates. Grace? Don’t even talk to me about Grace. It can’t be done.” The girls battled through the pouring rain and scorching hot days for the love of the sport. The season started off with a win against Shawnigan Lake School, 1-0, then we attacked our next challenge, Gulf Islands Secondary School, winning 5-0. The team had a tough loss to Kelsey Secondary 6-1, but that didn’t stop us from competing in the ISAs and winning three out of four of the games. In the final game of the season, Brentwood lost a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Kelsey, placing us second in our league. This was a huge accomplishment for the team. We not only bonded on the field but off the field too, making new friendships. As coach Collis said “It is always darkest before the dawn”. We have seen the light. Rae W, Alex ‘20
