Mill Bay Movember Mania
November is just completed, which means moustaches were appearing left and right on campus. Now for a bit of context …
Established in 2003, The Movember Foundation is a non-profit with the goal of ‘Changing the face of men’s health’, by encouraging men (which the charity refers to as “Mo Bros”) to get involved, aiming to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments, and ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths.
As the Foundation states, “Men’s health is a crisis”. A growing number of men – around 10.8 million globally – are facing life with a prostate cancer diagnosis. Testicular cancer is the most common cancer among young men. Another challenge is men’s mental health: one man dies by suicide every minute of every day, with males accounting for 69% of all suicides. These concerning statistics prompted the creation of Movember, a movement where participants grow moustaches in November to raise awareness, encourage others to donate to organizations that support the cause, and normalize open conversations about men’s health. This annual event has taken off and been adopted worldwide.
Here at Brentwood, we care deeply about our ‘Mo Bros’, so here’s what we’ve done to support their wellbeing this month.
The B-Well Club hosted multiple bake sales to raise money for Movember, where people were invited to donate to decorate a mustache-shaped cookie – and eat other home-baked goods. The sales were a great success, as over $500 was raised to donate to organizations that support men’s health. Jamie E, who helped with the organization of the events, says, “It felt really great to be volunteering for such a great cause that is so applicable and in definite need of awareness. I hope through events like these we can create a safe space that encourages a more open-minded approach to men’s mental health”.
Furthermore, Carys G, Stella B, and Rachelle S spoke during Assembly to educate the staff and students with information about the Movember cause. Elan A and Ambrose W also introduced the guidelines for Brentwood’s Movember competition. At this week’s assembly, winners were invited up on stage to showcase their mustaches: Mr Miller with the “bushiest mo”, Aiden W with the “most devious mo”, Medeas M with the “craziest mo”, and Musa H with the “best overall mo”.
Ms Folk, the teacher sponsor for B-Well, shares that “Movember supports not only men’s health initiatives, but projects like KidsHelpPhone. It was especially encouraging to see students’ faces light up and share their support once they knew this.”
We are very thankful to the B-Well volunteers who were not only great marketers but also excellent advocates, and to everyone who generously donated to the cause.
