More Than a Meeting: B-Well’s Impact on Brentwood
In the typical hustle-bustle of Brentwood life, B-Well is a space where students give back to the community, prioritise their own wellbeing, and find ways to improve Brentwood’s mental health support. Students in all grades can join the club, volunteer, seek support from the trained Grade Eleven or Twelve peer-support workers or their house reps, and help create a safe space for all students. B-Wells’ values and core principles are wellness, empathy, and support.
Getting trained to be a peer-support worker through B-Well helps us students strengthen our mental health literacy and gives us the ability to support those in need. Ainsley L, Hope ‘26, a B-Well Representative, explained, “Being a house rep for B-Well makes me realise how useful my peer-support training is, and how useful it will be later in life.” The weekly B-Well Rep meetings help Reps express their concerns or get information on what work is coming up in B-Well.
On the first Tuesday of every month, B-Well Captain Zoe G, Alex ‘26 and school counsellor Ms Julia Folk hold an “open meeting”, where anyone in the school can come for lunch, discuss what is happening this month for volunteer opportunities, and present ideas to expand the club. As far as volunteer opportunities go, students are given the chance to cook food for Nourish Cowichan and charitable events like decorating smile cookies at Tim Hortons, which enrich both the mind and soul.
In November, B-Well hosts “Movember” when students and staff can grow their moustaches in support of men’s mental health. There are several different categories; staff and students can win for their moustache, resulting in solidarity and support, but there is also a creative outlet for wacky moustaches.
Appreciation cards have been the latest B-Well craze, giving student a way to write sweet messages to their peers or staff. House Representatives of B-Well handed out cards to students and they were then delivered to the houses. Kate M, Alex ‘26 said, “Appreciation cards are definitely a highlight of the year. I love receiving and giving them! They are such an easy way to spread joy and are definitely cherished by everyone.” Reps had to sort through what looked like millions of cards and hand them out to students who were sent such happy packages of delight.
Coming up to the end of the term, B-Well has accomplished a lot! Members and representatives have been able to utilize their training and start to make their positive impact on the Brentwood community. Mental health support is wickedly important for students to have, and I believe that we Brentwood students are tremendously lucky to have such an impressive club to support us.
The effort that is constantly put into B-Well is a testament to the gratitude and stability of Brentwood students. I would like to thank Ms Folk and Zoe for making B-Well brilliant, and of course, all the house representatives who constantly work towards happier houses, and to all the devoted members of B-Well.
Every mind deserves its moments of care, and together, B-Well makes that possible!
