Off Campus Athletes

Taking on the school’s tripartite program is such a large commitment of time and effort that it can seem like there isn’t any time for activities beyond Brentwood. For new students, our busy schedule can even make them apprehensive about attending a boarding school.

However, the student athletes at Brentwood are a great example of how it is possible to be involved outside of the school, and not only keep up with schoolwork, but even be some of the exemplary student leaders of campus.

Head of Athletics, Mr Gage, says that these students “need to be organized and disciplined in the way they manage their time, but from my experience, most of the students who pursue these activities are highly motivated people and find ways to stay fully engaged in our school community”.

Additionally, Brentwood has an impressive record of producing collegiate student athletes – as well as over 25 Olympians. Ultimately, these students’ endeavors help open doors, help form connections, and help turn dreams into reality.

Let’s highlight several of Brentwood’s current student athletes: Gavyn K, Privett ‘22 is a member of the Golf Canada Junior team, and the reigning BC Junior Golf Champion. He regularly attends training at the Bear Mountain Golf Course and is currently finalizing a golf scholarship to play in the NCAA.

Miranda NP, Alex ‘23 plays basketball with the BC High Performance Program in Vancouver while also staying very involved here at the school. She is a star player on our Senior Girls Basketball team, as well as a recipient of the Brentwood Academic Colors Award last year. With all this extra work, Miranda admits, “Managing everything can definitely be a challenge, especially in my Grade 11 year”.

Our Assistant Head Prefect of Athletics, Jocelyn L, Mack ‘22 does it all when it comes to sports. On top of playing for multiple competitive sports teams here at Brentwood (volleyball, basketball, rowing and soccer) she also plays club volleyball in Victoria, as well as with the provincial team in Vancouver. Jocie says “I love being able to continue volleyball and I’m hoping to play post-secondary. However it does mean that I spend a lot of my time in the library catching up on homework.”

Jensa NG, Mack ‘23 is following in her brother’s footsteps as a member of the Vancouver Island Wave Soccer Program. She has also recently made the selection for Team BC, all while being an exceptional member of the campus and receiving the Triple Colors Award last year for excellence in academics, arts and athletics. Jensa states, “Although it can be difficult, it is also very rewarding”.

Additionally, Alec D, Whittall ‘22 and Oliver C, Ellis ‘22 are a part of the provincial rugby program; Dylan G, Whittall ‘23 is involved with both basketball and baseball outside of Brentwood; and Jagre K, Privett ‘23 along with Lucas K, Whittall ‘22 represent our golf program well in various external competitions.

Playing soccer off campus myself, I can say that it is a very hectic schedule at times, attending up to six days of soccer a week, but I am able to make it work and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
