One Last Leap

The culmination of the year commences with houses conducting their annual Prefect Dinners. This year the Mackenzie House Prefects, accompanied by Houseparent Ms Cheung and Interim Assistant Houseparent Ms Yang, ventured deep into Shawnigan to dine at The Lakehouse and enjoy a final moment as a grade group before the flurry of end-of-year and Graduation celebrations begin.

Before dinner began, Ms Cheung, per tradition, recited Dr. Seuss’s renowned Oh, the Places You’ll Go! As the first line was spoken, “Congratulations! Today is your day. You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!” The Mack girls shed a few tears. Coincidentally, Mr McGill, Brentwood’s Rock Band Instructor, was performing live to accompany Ms Cheung’s touching recitation.

Myra L, Mack ‘25 and Interhouse Co-Captain stated, “Ms Cheung continues to be our rock and support system through graduation and as we move on to bigger things.” The Prefects reflected on their fondest memories amongst each other as the rest of the meal continued. Siera E, Mack ‘25, remarked, “These are the people that have been there for me and grown up with me since the beginning of our Brentwood journeys. It’s special to be able to be together before we go our separate ways.”

While we dined and conversed, the overwhelming feeling of the night was gratitude. Mackenzie House Captain Sophie H, Mack ‘25 said, “We have all made such incredible memories at Brentwood and with this group. The house staff has been integral to Mack’s culture and the basis of so many relationships and opportunities.” Another huge shoutout to the wonderful human beings who make Mack House what it is!

Ultimately, the group wrapped up the meal by joining over a decade of Mackenzie Grads who write in the aforementioned Oh, the Places You’ll Go! to give thanks to Ms Cheung for her unwavering support and guidance throughout our high school journeys. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mackenzie House for four amazing years: I could not have asked for a better place to grow, learn, and make life-long memories.
